SCOTTSVILLE, N.Y. — A local Navy veteran organized a flag display to celebrate America’s 250th birthday.
Gary Hults, a Navy veteran in his 80s, set up more than 250 American flags at the American Legion in Scottsville. He and a few friends and family put out all the flags, News10NBC’s Declan Stablow reported.
Hults said he originally planned to buy all the flags himself, but the legion post offered to loan him the flags. There are exactly 256 flags in the display.
“I felt that the 250 USA anniversary is extremely important to America and to where we’re going and how we’re going to be. I also chose to do it because I thought it would bring us close together recognizing the fact that this is a 250th anniversary that people would start getting along a little bit smoother than a little bit better,” Hults said.
The extra six flags represent the country’s future, Hults said. People have come by to take pictures at the flags that represent the year they were born or married or represent a milestone for the country.
One visitor said the display gave her goosebumps. Hults plans to take everything down either Sunday night or Monday morning.
