LIST: Chicago suburbs cancel Fourth of July fireworks and events due to storms ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

After a day of severe weather, and with more storms in store, many Chicago suburbs have announced cancellations of their holiday parades and fireworks shows Saturday.

While forecasts indicate storms may be out of the area in time for some late-evening fireworks shows, many suburbs pre-emptively canceled their events due to flooding, damage and even more rain coming. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for numerous counties through at least 7 p.m.

This comes after several suburbs were forced to reschedule or cancel their holiday festivities Friday.

Here’s a look at what’s been canceled so far:

Lombard

In Lombard, officials said they “made the difficult decision” to cancel their fireworks display “due to current park conditions and the potential for additional rainfall throughout the day.”

“Since Thursday night, Madison Meadow Park has received approximately 4.52 inches of rainfall, leaving park grounds deeply saturated with multiple areas of standing water, making the site unsuitable for a large public gathering,” the village said in an alert to residents. “The Village’s fireworks contractor also determined that ground conditions are too saturated to safely move the trucks and equipment needed to set up the display.”

Officials are working to choose a future date to set off the display, but details were still being finalized.

Park Forest

Park Forest officials cited thunderstorms in the forecast and the condition of the Village Green in their decision to cancel the area’s parade, live entertainment and fireworks for Fourth of July.

“The decision was made with the safety of residents, visitors, volunteers, performers, and staff as the Village’s top priority,” the village said

Officials plan to reschedule the events for Labor Day weekend and said more details would be released in the coming weeks.

Woodridge-Downers Grove

Woodridge and Downers Grove officials said their fireworks show was being rescheduled “after continued evaluation of [Saturday’s] weather and site conditions.”

“Unfortunately, the condition of the grounds at the launch site has made it unsafe for our fireworks vendor to set up and safely conduct the fireworks display. Based on those site conditions, our fireworks vendor has determined that today’s show cannot proceed,” a post from the villages read.

A new date has not yet been identified, but officials said it would not be Sunday as their fireworks vendor already has other commitments for Independence Day events.

“We understand how disappointing this news is. We know the Fourth of July fireworks are a cherished tradition for many families, and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding. We look forward to celebrating with our community on the rescheduled date,” the post read.

Streamwood

Streamwood officials canceled their fireworks display Saturday and said their rain date, which was previously planned for Sunday, would also not be usable.

“Unfortunately, there will be no fireworks display this year,” the suburb wrote on social media.

Officials cited heavy rainfall that “left the grounds too saturated to safely accommodate the equipment needed for the show.”

“With more rain expected tonight, the field will not be dry enough for a safe setup [Sunday],” the post read. “We know this is disappointing, and we appreciate your understanding as we put safety first. Thank you, and we wish everyone a safe and happy Independence Day weekend.”

Flossmoor

Storm damage, hazardous road conditions and “resources being dedicated to the cleanup” forced the cancellation of Flossmoor’s children’s bicycle parade.

Officials encouraged residents to instead gather at the Village Hall earlier Saturday morning to decorate bikes and take part in some of the planned children’s activities, like face painting, a bounce house and “treats to celebrate America’s birthday.”

Glen Ellyn

The village of Glen Ellyn canceled its evening celebration Saturday, though its afternoon parade went on as planned.

Officials said park conditions are recent storms and pending weather led to the “difficult decision.”

“We know this is unfortunate news and hope to reschedule the celebration later this summer,” the village said.

While many events have been canceled, some are planning to continue as scheduled, though officials are urging residents to continue to check as weather conditions develop.
