Potential NFC North Fireworks, Remembering Some Bears Fan Favorites, and Other Happy Fourth Of July Bullets ...Middle East

I’ll join the Chicago Bears in sending well wishes on the Fourth of July.

Have a safe & happy 4th! ?? pic.twitter.com/5nZfioUVU1

Please be safe. Eat well. Enjoy the company of your friends and family. If you’re riding solo, then enjoy the day in your own way. Are you going to the Cubs-Cardinals game tonight at Wrigley Field? Say “hi” if you see me.

What’s your favorite Bears-related “declaration” of independence? Mine is when the Bears “declared” they were done with Matt Eberflus. While the United States of America is celebrating its 250th anniversary, the Chicago Bears are preparing for Year 2 under Ben Johnson. The rising second-year head coach set a high bar in 2025, and I look forward to seeing how he and his team follow things up in 2026. With that being said, I am using this opportunity to encourage you to exercise extreme caution when handling fireworks today. I want you to be around when we get more moments like this in 2026 (and beyond):

Happy 4th of July! ??Here’s to seeing more fireworks like this from #DaBears in 2026 — including this one, which will be on highlight reels for the next 250 years of this nation’s existence. pic.twitter.com/s75mGkn2ix

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@BN_Bears) July 4, 2026 That isn’t the biggest moment in Bears history. Not by a long shot. But when it comes to modern lore, I don’t think there is a more historically significant moment. That speaks volumes about how down bad we’ve been as a fan base (and how bad the Bears have been as a franchise) in recent years, but gutting through the tough times to have that moment makes it all the more special. With fireworks on our mind, it sounds like the Vikings quarterback competition could get ugly. Will we see sparks fly in Minnesota? More from Carter Bahns at CBS Sports:

Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy offered two different accounts of the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback competition when asked this spring about their working relationship. Murray, who arrived on a minimum contract as the presumptive favorite to win the job, said that he embraced a mentor role and that McCarthy had been “overly acceptive” of that leadership. The incumbent starter, however, made it sound as though they are not on such friendly terms.

Neither is owed the No. 1 quarterback role, but whoever loses it will have reason to be discontented. Murray is a seven-year starter who, at his best, produces among the league’s top half of signal-callers. McCarthy is a recent first-round pick who has arguably not received a fair shake due to injuries.

Over at FOX Sports, a look at how the Detroit Lions are being forced to look into the free-agent cornerback market after releasing Terrion Arnold earlier in the week. Among the free-agent names you might be familiar with are Pro Bowlers Marshon Lattimore and Kenny Moore II, as well as 2021 All-Pro Trevon Diggs. It isn’t pretty out there, so I do not envy the Lions one bit. Meanwhile, the Bears should still be looking for defensive line help. Perhaps some buzz will kick up there when we get closer to the start of training camp. On the other side of the line, some Bears offensive linemen are working with a retired Pro Bowler:

— Zack Pearson (@Zack_Pearson) July 3, 2026 In case you missed it, we wrote about six-time Pro Bowl left tackle Terron Armstead working out with Braxton Jones and Theo Benedet earlier in the offseason. So it’s not as if these guys just hopped on the bandwagon right now. This is just the latest snapshot of a larger picture. Hopefully, this hard work pays off for the players — as well as the team. If I had to wager on a Bears player who could win a hot dog eating contest at a friends and family cookout, I’d put my money on right tackle Darnell Wright. Our countdown to Week 1 of the NFL season continues:

We are 7️⃣1️⃣ days from the Bears kicking off the 2026 regular season vs. the Panthers. Let's remember some guys who whore No. 71 for the Bears over the years: ? James Williams (1991-2002) ? Josh Sitton (2016-17) ? Israel Idonije (2004-2012) ? Jason Peters (2021)[image or embed]

— Bleacher Nation Bears (@bn-bears.bsky.social) July 4, 2026 at 9:42 AM James “Big Cat” Williams was one of my favorite Bears players growing up. A converted defensive lineman, Williams successfully transitioned into an offensive lineman and made 143 starts at right tackle between 1994 and 2002. He even made a Pro Bowl for his efforts in 2001. That guy was a mauler and remains an all-time favorite player of mine to this day.

Some other Bears players who have worn No. 71 over the years: Riley Reiff (2022), Ryan Bates (2024-25), Arlington Hambright (2020). It looks like Jedrick Wills Jr. will wear No. 71 for the Bears in 2026. If he is healthy and can play to his potential, he is a dark horse to win the starting left tackle position this summer.

As you might expect, the Taylor Swift-Travis Kelce wedding was pretty darn football-coded. I didn’t see any Bears mentioned as being in attendance while scrolling this morning. However, I got a kick out of this tidbit from Pro Football Talk about Adam Sandler officiating the event. To go from “The Wedding Singer” to a wedding officiant for a pop mega-star and a future Pro Football Hall of Famer is quite the career arc. A fun read at ESPN from Sarah Bishop, who writes about what NFL players are reading during their summer break. I’ve started to get back into books in recent years. As it turns out, buying the books you want to read is much easier than reading them. Nevertheless, I plan on finishing at least two books before the Bears kick off their regular season in September.

Not that there was any doubt, but MLB made it officially official with Pete Crow-Armstrong being named the NL Player of the Month in June. The Chicago Cubs all-star center fielder hit for a .381 average, got on base at a .468 clip, slugged .781, and posted a 1.249 OPS. PCA had a .516 wOBA and 234 wRC+. To put those numbers in perspective, his June numbers would look like this if you extrapolated them over 162 games: 68 home runs, 124 runs batted in, 49 steals, 130 runs scored, 31 doubles, 12 triples, and 105 walks. Where can I sign up for a season of that? Chicago Bears QB Caleb Williams with Chicago Cubs CF Pete Crow-Armstrong at a Chicago Blackhawks agme. | Matt Marton-Imagn Images “Bulls Announce SLAP-Happy NBA Summer League Lineup” is a gold-star headline from our friends in the BN Basketball Department. Chicago Blackhawks General Manager Kyle Davidson has a lot to say, which makes sense considering how much he has to explain in terms of roster building for his hockey team.
