Just hours after severe weather left a trail of damage across the Chicago area, with trees down, power out and Fourth of July celebrations flooded, another round of storms is still possible.
The second round is expected to hit sometime between 6 p.m. and midnight, particularly between the Interstate 88 and I-290 corridor in northern Illinois.
“Have multiple ways to receive warning information and a plan to quickly get to safety,” the National Weather Service warned.
The main threats expected are damaging winds capable of downing trees, torrential downpours that could lead to flash flooding and lightning strikes.
The storms could lead to hazardous conditions as many prepare for Fourth of July holiday celebrations, though several suburbs have already canceled their festivities.
Some areas have already seen between 3-5 inches of rain in the past 24 hours, so any new round of storms Friday evening could quickly lead to flash flooding, NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes said.
Storms earlier Friday led to severe weather alerts, including a tornado warning in Wisconsin and several severe thunderstorm warnings across Chicago suburbs Friday afternoon. More than 70,000 were left without power and downed trees were reported across the region.
In nearby tourist destination Lake Geneva, a boat capsized in a storm, leaving three people dead and seven rescued as officials warned of damaged homes, downed power lines and scattered trees and limbs overwhelmed city resources at an “unprecedented” rate.
More storm activity is possible overnight and into early Saturday, though dry time was expected Saturday morning. By early afternoon on the Fourth of July holiday, another system could roll in, once again threatening plans.
Specific timing for that system will depend on Friday evening’s storms, however.
