So far, this World Cup has robbed us of those precious experiences where we watch along with family and friends. Many kick-off times are monstrous for fans across Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
Last night brought a reprieve. England’s epic clash with Mexico, scheduled for 1am BST Monday, will be brought forward to Sunday evening because of storms. Even if Mexico vs England had been 4am, I’d gather family around the TV. These are special moments.
This week I thought of my Grandma and Mum. Exactly 30 years ago, we stayed up late together to watch England lose on penalties to Germany, in the Euro 96 semi-final. Neither of them knew much about football, but we were shouting at the telly and hugging. It’s one of my treasured memories. If Grandma were here today, she’d be watching.
Back in 2000, Dad and I stayed up through the night to watch Steve Redgrave compete at the Sydney Olympics, trying to win his fifth gold medal, aged 38. We started the race quietly. By halfway we were standing on the sofa together, screaming at the TV, begging Redgrave. Euphoria. Precious times, rarely repeated.
And of course, if England win, it will rank among their greatest away victories. The jeopardy isreal. Altitude will be debilitating. England’s players won’t sleep well for two nights beforehand – their hotel is likely to be besieged by crowds of Mexicans letting off fireworks and horns.
Mexico also have the best home fans at the World Cup. The Azteca stadium is a fortress, the atmosphere will sizzle. What an occasion. Lose or win, these are the nights – the reason you want to compete in a World Cup, and the tapestry of a nation’s, and a family’s, sporting history.
