NEW YORK — The State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision is announcing significant progress on safety, culture and accountability efforts.
The department says it’s completed more than a dozen recommended actions with nearly 50 more underway. Some of these include body-worn camera performance reviews and audits, full deployment of body-worn cameras across all correctional facilities, enhanced use of force review processes, and much more.
The state mentions the deaths of Robert Brooks and Messiah Nantwi as a catalyst for this change.
Officials report a 42% drop in excessive use of force allegations and notable decreases in contraband and assaults compared to last year.
Last December, Gov. Kathy Hochul passed a prison reform legislation to improve the safety and well-being of all staff and prisoners.
