ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC is tracking a fourth straight day of temperatures in the 90s on Friday. Amid our four-day-long Yellow Alert, shelters are working to protect homeless people from the excessive heat and humidity.
The Open Door Mission steps up to protect those in need during extreme temperatures, whether it’s extreme heat or cold. Robert Williams, Open Door Mission’s CEO, said people who are homeless are at risk of heat-related illness.
“So the first thing we want everyone to know is that we want everyone to feel safe. You are welcome here to cool down, to get water, to rest,” Williams said.
Heat stroke happens when your body can no longer cool itself, and your temperature rises above 104 degrees. Unlike heat exhaustion, heat stroke can cause confusion or loss of consciousness. Williams said the shelter is taking a preventative approach rather than a reactive one.
“You can find those types of risk particularly in the unhoused and those who are elderly, or even have medical conditions preexisting. This is the kind of weather that can be really dangerous,” Williams said.
Williams also said most homeless people often have heavy clothing for the winter months, but they might lack lighter clothing for the summer. The Open Door Mission is set to expand by the fall of 2028. Williams says the new 16,000-square-foot expansion will house 80 more people.
