From ‘House of the Dragon’ to ‘Supergirl’: Milly Alcock shares her journey from terror to stardom ...Egypt

News by : (EGYPT INDEPENDENT) -

Australian actress Milly Alcock confirmed that her performance as the dragon-riding Rhaenyra Targaryen in the series “House of the Dragon” was what caught the eye of James Gunn, the writer and director of the movie “Superman”.

Gunn, alongside Peter Safran, co-leads DC Studios. Their team subsequently selected Alcock to portray Kara Zor-El, globally known as “Supergirl”. She made her official debut in the final scene of last summer’s “Superman”, which marked the formal launch of the new DC Universe (DCU).

This role secured her very first cinematic leading role, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira. The film is currently screening in Egyptian, Arab, and international theaters.

The audition: From Australia to Atlanta

“I met Peter Safran in late 2023,” Alcock recalled. “I don’t remember us speaking directly about ‘Supergirl’, but a few weeks later I got an email saying: ‘We want you to tape an audition for ‘Supergirl’.’ I think by that point I already knew the film was inspired by the ‘Woman of Tomorrow’ storyline, as they had sent me the comic book version along with it.”

Living in Australia at the time, she recorded the self-tape. “I had never actually done a final callback audition in a room before. Nowadays, most auditions are done online, which is totally different from standing in a room with the creators. Afterward, I flew from Australia to Atlanta—it was a very long flight. I was so terrified and nervous.

The scary part wasn’t the room or the people in it; it was the sheer stakes of it all. I remember listening to the song ‘This Is the Day’ in the car on my way to the audition. One of the lyrics goes, ‘This is the day your life will surely change,’ and that was exactly what happened.”

Confronting stardom

After landing the role, Alcock faced a personal realization. “I realized I had been running away from confronting myself. Initially, I used to deliberately say, trying to sound casual, ‘I’m here to be an actress, not a movie star.’ But the reality was that I couldn’t even get a role in an independent film until I participated in a massive franchise. After ‘House of the Dragon’, I didn’t work for almost a full year; all I did during that time was a single theater play.”

She noted that her emotional state during filming closely mirrored her character’s arc. “My personal journey was exactly like Kara’s journey in the movie. The mindset was always: hide… run… pretend it’s not happening. But ultimately, you have to face it all to heal a part of yourself you’ve ignored for a long time. It was a beautiful thing that happened naturally.”

Trust and intense training

Alcock credits director Craig Gillespie with helping her navigate the pressure. “Craig Gillespie was absolutely wonderful. I remember sitting down with him early in prep and saying: ‘I’m terrified. I don’t know how I’m going to do this, and I don’t know how I’m going to be this person.’ I didn’t just mean the character in the film, I also meant: How will I handle the fame? How will I handle the press and everything that comes with this role? That’s where our relationship of trust began, because I knew he had my back and wanted the best for me.”

The physical demands of the superhero role required a complete reset. “I trained for two full months. I went to Leavesden Studios every day, starting with physical fitness exercises in the morning, taking a short break, and then spending two hours on action sequence training. For the action training, I started completely from scratch. I am naturally athletic and played sports throughout my childhood, but during my early twenties I drifted away from it, so I had to start all over again.”

When asked about how comic writer Tom King described Kara as a character living amidst deep pain, Alcock found an immediate emotional connection. “That was what attracted me most to the character, because pain is a universal feeling. Everyone has experienced it, whether their life is easy or hard, which is why I was able to connect with Kara from the very first moment.”

About the Film

“Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow” follows Kara Zor-El as she embarks on a journey across space alongside a young girl named Ruthie to hunt down her family’s killer, while also trying to recover her dog, Krypto.

Throughout the adventure, she battles space pirates and dangerous criminals before crossing paths with the infamous bounty hunter, Lobo. Blending action, sci-fi, and human drama, the film offers a large-scale space adventure that departs from traditional superhero tropes.

The film is produced by DC Studios and distributed by Warner Bros. and United Motion Pictures.

It was released in theaters and IMAX in North American on June 26, 2026 (with international rollouts beginning a couple of days earlier on June 24 and 25).
