ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A hit-and-run was caught on camera early Sunday morning at the intersection of North Street and Hudson Avenue in downtown Rochester.
Surveillance footage shows what appears to be a white Jeep Grand Cherokee, with a black roof, come up behind Tevin Conyers as he rode his e-bike and continue driving into him. The crash happened just after midnight.
Conyers came to News10NBC on Wednesday with a fractured wrist and severe scraps and bruises. News10NBC’s Erin Mahon met him on Thursday at the intersection where the hit happened.
“I was trying to take a left, towards Hudson, and the car kept going straight, and completely, completely didn’t see me,” Conyers said.
At the time, Conyers only had footage from the S&T Lounge further down the road, which didn’t show the hit. But as Mahon and Conyers were talking, someone approached from the store that sits directly in front of where Conyers got hit.
The store has two surveillance cameras pointed right at the road. The footage is powerful, but it’s not clear enough to show a license plate.
Mahon asked Conyers how he would feel if police aren’t able to solve the case. “To be honest, I’ll be okay. I’m not the type of person to mourn anything,” Conyers said. “I’m just more of a happy person, and I’m happy that I’m here and happy I’m alive.”
Conyers’ lights were on and he was making a legal turn heading towards a bike lane. He wants to raise awareness for bikers across the city.
“Wear your helmets, stay — keep everything equipment-wise, keep things on,” Conyers said. “You have to be way more careful than drivers because they don’t care about your life unfortunately. You just have to be more protective over your life on these e-bikes, e-scooters, scooters, anything e-motor-wise because you could just lose your life in the next second and you won’t even know it.”
Police told Mahon hit-and-runs are hard to solve for a few reasons. Not only do they have to identify the car — they also need to identify the driver. What’s more — if the victim isn’t seriously injured or killed by the incident — the driver’s only charged with a misdemeanor.
