Joel Klatt calls them like he sees them, whether it’s in late June, when the upcoming season is just coming into focus, or whether it’s late December, when that season’s national champion is being decided.
In this case, it’s the former, and the Fox Sports college football analyst appeared on The Next Round college football podcast earlier this week with a warning to Athens — Klatt just doesn’t believe that Georgia has what it takes to win the national championship in 2026.
Klatt actually asked the panel of podcast hosts what their feeling on Georgia was for this fall, and then Klatt got down to the business of breaking down exactly why he believes the Dawgs won’t be adding a national title to the ones they captured in 2021 and 2022.
Why? Simple. It’s the offensive playmakers surrounding Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton, or the lack thereof. It’s the reason Klatt believes a lot of experts aren’t really mentioning the Bulldogs right now as the season draws ever closer.
“Who is catching the football (for Georgia)?” Klatt asked. “I don’t think you can win a national championship just dominating on defense. There’s going to be a moment when you have to make a play.”
This doesn’t mean Klatt doesn’t think Georgia will be really good this fall, as the Dawgs seemingly always are. He does. Klatt thinks Georgia can win the SEC for the third straight year. He just doesn’t believe the Dawgs can go the distance in January.
“I have a hunch we’re going to get down to it and that’s gonna be the one thing (lack of playmakers) that holds them back from winning a national championship,” Klatt said. “It is not going to be Gunner (Stockton). I think Gunner is fine. It is the lack of threats.”
