Tens of thousands of people, many in costume, will soon be descending upon downtown streets and taking over the Gaslamp. It’s part Mardi Gras, part carnival, and pure San Diego.Comic-Con, the massive, annual pop culture gathering, kicks off in late July in and around the San Diego Convention Center.

For regular attendees like Paul Astwood, it’s an event that he’s long been preparing for.He runs a local company that sells collectibles, toys and other pop culture items and he has been attending Comic-Con for more than a decade. Like so many other diehard fans, Astwood prepares early for the event and puts in long days on the convention floor.“With all the craziness happening now, I think I will be happy with just having a good show as well as seeing fans and past customers who can get away and have fun for a while,” said Astwood.

Here’s an early look at this year’s Comic-Con:

DATES

Comic-Con is taking place on July 23-26, with a preview night scheduled for July 22.

TICKETS

If you don’t already have a coveted badge for the event, then you’re likely out of luck, as all the tickets were sold last year. Some people try to get in by volunteering at the event, but daily volunteer registration for 2026 has been closed. There is one way to get a badge, but it’s going to cost you. The Comic-Con Museum in Balboa Park sells “Legend” memberships that include a badge for the four days and the preview night. The cost is $1,900.

PROGRAMS

Little is known so far about big presentations from television networks and movie studios, or the attractions that will be installed throughout the Gaslamp. But the big news we do know is that Marvel Studios will be returning to spacious Hall H of the Convention Center after sitting out last year. Expect Marvel to highlight the new “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” film, which is coming out on Aug. 4. It’s likely Marvel will also tease fans with glimpses of its blockbuster “Avengers: Doomsday” film scheduled to be released in December.Other shows and movies featured include a 40th anniversary celebration of “Aliens” and a 15th anniversary celebration of the TV show “Grimm.”Not to be outdone, D.C. characters and comics will be celebrated at the annual Her Universe Fashion Show at the Manchester Grand Hyatt on Thursday, July 23, at 6 p.m. The show will spotlight designers from across the country competing with runway looks inspired by DC’s legendary superheroes and super-villains.And, of course, there are the parties. Fandom, an online entertainment and gaming platform, will host its annual party Thursday night at the FLOAT rooftop bar at the Hard Rock Hotel. The party will include a concert from rock band, The Coverups, featuring Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong. Party entry is by invitation only.

FOOD & DRINKS

Relic Bakery will join the Comic-Con celebrations with a Pokémon-themed pop-up event in partnership with Tailored Hair and Sneaky Fox Records on Friday, July 24, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
