‘Do they have to be concerned about air quality?’ Ogden neighbors react to asbestos cleanup site near Northampton Park ...Middle East

OGDEN, N.Y. — Neighbors near Northampton Park are raising concerns after discovering a decontamination site along Route 31.

The state Department of Transportation says it detected asbestos on state property right along Route 31 near Hubbell Road. The state says it’s been working with an asbestos contractor to clear out some construction and demolition debris.

News10NBC’s Garrett Chan went to the site to investigate. Two metal containers sit closed off by a gate with a compact track loader nearby. A muddy path with prints left by the track loader leads through the woods down a steep hill where crews have been working to clear trees and reach the debris.

“For the last two weeks, every morning and every afternoon on my way in and home from work, I noticed a trailer by the side of the road that said decontamination, a number of cars parked to the side and people going in and out of the woods with white hazmat suits on putting items into the dumpsters,” Maynard said.

Rebecca Maynard was the neighbor who reached out to News10NBC initially about the site. When Chan stopped by the site, there were no workers or “decontamination” sign present.

Chan showed pictures of the site to people driving around the area and regulars at Northampton Park who all expressed similar concern.

“People in the area, like, do they have to be concerned about the air quality because of this? You know, there’s children and elderly, and that is not okay,” said Heather Graham, a driver in the area.

“Hearing about this first is anywhere is not great. It’s bad for people’s health, but it’s nice to see that the DOT’s doing something about it. I’m kind of used to seeing cleanups and stuff like that happen. But it is alarming, I think, for most folks, if you’re driving by and you see you guys in hazmat suits working, you want to know what it is, get to the bottom of it and find out that something’s actually being done about it,” Oster said.

The DOT says it’s collecting all the asbestos materials and making sure they’re disposed of properly. The Ogden Town Supervisor says the asbestos disposal site was legal and dates back about 20 years ago.

The town says it wasn’t notified by the DOT on the project, so it wasn’t able to inform neighbors about what was going on. The state DOT says it will wrap up work in the coming days.
