Rochester International Jazz Festival
The second-to-last day of the 23rd annual Rochester International Jazz Festival is underway. Friday’s edition of the festival will feature dozens of free and ticketed acts from world-class artists in jazz and other genres.
This year’s festival features over 300 shows over the course of nine days, including the return of the free, outdoor headliner series. Ana Popović, an award-winning guitarist who incorporates electric funk, jazz, and blues, will be Friday night’s free headliner at Parcel 5. The show starts at 9 p.m., and Don Mancuso & D Drive will be the opening act at 7 p.m.
Then, Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue will close out the festival with a free show at Parcel 5 on Saturday night. This will mark his 10th performance at the festival, and some of his shows have brought out 15,000 people to downtown Rochester. That show also starts at 9 p.m. Cinnamon Jones will open the show at 7 p.m.
There will also be free acts at the Jazz Street Stage on Gibbs Street, the Wegmans Pavilion, the Rochester Central Library, and more during the final two days. That includes performances from local high school and college jazz bands. There are also Club Pass shows and a free jazz workshop with drummer Billy Goodness. World Cup watch party at Rochester Public Market
The Rochester Public Market is holding a World Cup watch party for the second night in a row. The market will show the group stage games on two giant, outdoor screens on Friday from 6 p.m. to midnight.
There will be tables, seating, and soccer-themed activities at the market. There will also be live music from the Flying Object Band from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday night’s World Cup schedule includes four games: Cabo Verde vs. Saudi Arabia, Uruguay vs. Spain, New Zealand vs. Belgium, and Egypt vs. Iran. Thursday’s watch party at the market brought out crowds of people cheering on Team USA during their final group stage match. Before that, on June 12, Rochester’s East End was packed with people cheering on Team USA during an outdoor watch party for the first group stage match against Paraguay. This marks the first men’s World Cup that the U.S. has hosted since 1994.
America’s 250th celebration
A celebration of America’s 250th birthday is taking place at the Monroe County Hall of Justice on Exchange Boulevard. Court staff will perform patriotic music, and there will be refreshments. The celebration starts at 12:30 p.m. on the first floor. All are welcome to join.
Movies in the Park
Ontario Beach Park will host the first “Movies in the Park” of the season on Friday night. The park will screen “Captain America: Winter Soldier” on a giant outdoor screen.
“Movies in the Park” is a family-friendly series of movie screenings at popular spots around the county. It runs until August. The screenings are free and begin at dusk. Here’s the rest of the schedule this season:
