For the first time this month, we won’t be hitting up against any major holidays this weekend. But two of the city’s signature celebrations, plus the return of an enviro-friendly event in North County and a fun varied slate of music-related events, are still on tap.
Friday, June 26
Cafecito Con Alzheimer’s: The non-profit group Alzheimer’s San Diego, which offers community education sessions for both people living with dementia and their caregivers, will host a Spanish-language discussion at the Molina Healthcare El Cajon One Stop Help Center (576 N. 2nd St. in El Cajon) from 10-11:30 a.m. Admission is free.
Noche Mexicana: El Flow Dance Studio (9474 Black Mountain Rd.) brings back this event featuring two rooms’ worth of dancing; the night starts at 8:30 p.m. with a workshop on cumbia and banda dancing until 10, when you can apply your lessons in the main room, or head to the second room for bachata and salsa tracks. Tickets are $20 for the dance party and $30 to attend both that and the workshop.
Opening Night with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra: It’s showtime at the Rady Shell at Jacobs Park (222 Marina Park Way) starting at 7:30 p.m. Conductor and artistic director Rafael Payare will lead the company through Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Festive Overture” before violinist Stefan Jackiw joins them for performances of Sergei Prokofiev’s “Violin Concerto No. 2” and Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 5.” Tickets range from $39 to $124.
Songwriter Sanctuary LGBTQ+ Pride Edition: The monthly music event at Normal Heights United Church (4650 Mansfield St.) will mark the month with a trio of local acts: Daddy, The Dimes and Saint Misty. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with the show starting at 7 p.m. Organizers have suggested a $10 donation but say that “no one [will be] turned away for lack of funds.”
Saturday, June 27
Dorothy’s Depot — A Queer Makers Market: The Queer Liberation Network and Libelula Books join forces to feature more than 65 LGBTQIA+ creators at The WOO! gallery in Barrio Logan (2112 Main St.) from noon to 5 p.m.

Mass Creativity Day: The New Children’s Museum (200 W. Island Ave.) invites visitors to imagine “more just, joyful, and inclusive futures” from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at this free event, featuring live musical performances, storytelling activities, and art stations.
Museum of Us Pride Party: The museum will host this family-friendly celebration at its Balboa Park home (1350 El Prado) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. featuring storytime with the Haus of St. James. Attendance is free if you register ahead of time, with standard admission prices applying after 2 p.m.
O.B. Street Fair & Chili Cook-Off: Organizers expect tens of thousands of people to descend upon Ocean Beach for this mammoth free event entering its 42nd year. The fair itself, which runs from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. will feature musical acts on two live stages, a beer garden and eating contests involving both burgers and chicken wings. Free trolley services from the Old Town Trolley Station will also be available.
Oceanside USA 250 Festival: Getting a jump on the 4th of July festivities, the city is inviting visitors to the Junior Seau Pier Amphitheatre (301 The Strand N.) from noon to 6 p.m. for a free event featuring chili cook-off and pie eating events, live music and a “kid’s grand prix” as well as family-oriented games.
Sunday, June 28
EcoFest Encinitas: North County’s longest-running event of its type is back at Encinitas Community Park (425 Santa Fe Dr.) from noon to 4 p.m. featuring eateries providing organic food; a curated lineup of vendors; live music and a silent auction, with no charge to attend.
Gothic Pride: Club Ascension, which has held events around San Diego for two decades now, teams up with podcasters Trinity Radio to present this fundraiser for the Goth Collective’s float at the upcoming San Diego Pride parade. The dance party starts at 8 p.m. at the Casbah (2501 Kettner Blvd.) with tickets costing $15 at the door.
Scoop San Diego Ice Cream Festival in North Park: Sharpen up that sweet tooth — more than 30 vendors are expected to take part in this event at 30th Street and North Park Way. This is the festival’s eighth year, but its first working with Feeding San Diego, a food bank who will receive the net proceeds from this year’s event. Admission is free, but a $45 general admission ticket to the festival includes 10 two-ounce samples; a $90 “First Scoop Experience” ticket ups the ante: you get the 10 samples, plus entry at 11 a.m. — an hour before the festival’s official start time — and priority access to all the eateries taking part.
