Korstanje is one of the Netherlands’ top swimmers, making numerous international finals over the last half decade, and is a key part of their medley relay. He owns lifetime bests of 21.98 in the 50 free, 22.72 in the 50 fly, and 50.59 in the 100 fly.
The Dutch swimmer has not elaborated on the exact nature of his injury, but his reference to “building a strong foundation for the future”, along with this summer being the first in six years without a World Championships or Olympic Games, it would appear that this is a decision taken with one eye on LA 2028 in two years’ time.
It has been nearly a decade since Korstanje’s international debut at the 2016 World Short Course Championships, where he placed 32nd in the 50 free (21.95) and 37th in the 100 free (48.54). He made his first European final at the 2018 edition of the Championships at the age of 19, placing 6th in the 50 fly in a PB of 23.38.
He was a relay-only swimmer at the 2019 World Championships, surprisingly swimming backstroke on the Dutch men’s medley relay which missed the final in 15th. That came at the end of his first season at NC State, where he had made a pair of NCAA ‘B’ finals in the 50 free and 100 free.
He took an Olympic redshirt in the 2020-2021 season, which paid off as he dropped his 100 fly from 53.40 to 51.54, placing 12th in the Olympic semi-finals in Tokyo, and won his first international medal with silver in the mixed medley relay at the European Championships.
Returning to NC State in the fall of 2021, Korstanje placed 4th in the 100 fly and 5th in the 50 free at the 2022 NCAA Championships. He again made an international semi-final in the summer of 2022, placing 9th in the 100 fly (51.41) and 10th in the 50 fly (23.14) at the World Championships.
He lowered the Dutch record in the 100 fly at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, clocking 50.78 in the heats, before adding time in both the semi-final (50.98) and final (51.05) to place 5th.
He again just missed the podium at the 2024 World Championships, placing 4th in the 100 fly in 51.41, and despite a Dutch record of 22.88 in the semi-finals of the 50 fly at the 2024 European Championships, he again just missed the medals as he placed 4th in the final in 23.10. An individual European medal still eludes him.
Korstanje had potentially his best international meet at the 2024 Olympic Games, breaking his Dutch record in the 100 fly with a 50.59 in the semi-finals before placing 6th in the final in 50.83. He also split a sizzling 50.27 in the men’s medley relay heats.
He won bronze in the 50 fly at the 2024 World Short Course Championships, having clocked a 21.62 in the heats which makes him the #2 swimmer in history behind Noe Ponti. He also placed 5th in the 50 free final in 20.79, having clocked a Dutch record of 20.63 in the semi-final.
Korstanje is the third big-name swimmer to be missing the European Championships this summer. Carles Coll Marti, who trains under Sergio Lopez at Georgia Tech, announced earlier this week that he would not be attending while he resolves complications around his U.S. visa. He is the reigning World short course and European short course champion in the 200 breast
Miron Lifintsev will spend the summer rehabbing a shoulder injury which has been hampering the 20-year-old since last season. He had not qualified for Russia‘s European Championship team with his highest finish at the recent Russian Championships being 3rd in the 50 back. Kliment Kolesnikov and Pavel Samusenko will represent Russia in the backstroke events.
An even bigger name who is a doubt for the championships is the host nation’s Maxime Grousset. The Frenchman is the reigning world champion in both the 50 fly and the 100 fly, while being a serious threat in the sprint free events as well. A foot injury from a “training jump” could rob viewers of a rematch with Noe Ponti in the sprint fly events.
He will miss this week’s French Elite Swimming Championships, but will likely be named to the European Championships team if recovered in time. There are just over two months between the point when he reported his injury (11 June) and the start of the meet (10 August), while L’Equipe reported his recovery time at four weeks.
Further doubts include the Italian pair of Ludovico Viberti, the #3 performer of all time in the 50 breast, and Nicolo Martinenghi, the 2022 world champion and 2024 Olympic champion in the 100 breast. Both swimmers missed the Italian Championships in mid-April with injury, but will have a second opportunity to qualify at the Sette Colli later this week.
