The game’s high octane tutorial introduces you to these in quick succession, and there will be different vehicles spread throughout the main story campaign. But don’t worry, in multiplayer and arcade modes, you can jump straight into podracing whenever you want.
Secondly, in terms of things that surprised me, this game is much harder than you might expect. Those podracers, they are famously fragile, and they are gonna smash to smithereens every time you go into a wall or an enemy with much force.
Each track and each vehicle will take some getting used to, but you’ll feel a sense of achievement when you finally nail a tricky transition. In the campaign, some missions will require you to test out a new vehicle, and those can be very difficult to nail on the first attempt.
There are also walking-around segments (picture a Formula 1 paddock but spacey) where you get to meet the other characters, buy upgrades for your vehicles, and pick up some nuggets of backstory, all of which adds a bit more depth to the overall experience.
Also, it’s worth noting that the overarching structure is similar to a roguelike, the sub-genre of gaming that sends you back to the start every time you die. Technically, it’s more of a roguelight, because it’s not quite so harsh as to bin you off for every dismal race performance.

You will sometimes get an optional mission - like, for example, the one we mentioned earlier about testing a new vehicle – and if you fail to succeed at that, your token is lost and you’re kicked out of the tournament.
I was expecting just an Episode I: Podracer clone, and this demo told me to expect a lot more than that, with Galactic Racer being stuffed with surprises as well as thrilling races. We shall follow its progress with great interest.
