Understandably, this can be quite tricky to follow, especially when tie-breakers come into the equation for sides who earned the same number of points. And then there’s added awkwardness of teams potentially waiting for several days before learning whether they’re actually going through or not. That’s the case for South Korea and Scotland, and others will join them in that boat as MD3 progresses.
Thankfully, though, we’ve made it a little easier to keep abreast of what’s going on. Below you’ll find a live table that tracks the probability of each third-place team reaching the last 32 and their likeliest next opponent, utilising the Opta supercomputer’s latest predictions.
The table only shows teams who are third in their group at a given time, but figures will update after every goal and at the end of each match, so it’ll update frequently and as developments occur.
Bosnia-Herzegovina already know they will be going through as one of the eight best third-place teams, while Croatia, Sweden, South Korea, Paraguay, Belgium and Algeria are all heavily fancied by the Opta supercomputer.

For instance, all teams in groups G (Egypt, Iran, Belgium and New Zealand) and H (Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia) can still qualify, while qualification remains a possibility for three teams in several other groups.
The margins are incredibly thin. As of the latest tournament simulations run by the Opta supercomputer, teams have less than a 1% chance of progress with two points; that goes up to 68.1% with three points, while you are practically assured of progress if you finish third with four points.
And as noted before, goal difference could be a deciding factor. While the primary tie-breaker within groups is head-to-head record, you obviously can’t use that when comparing teams from different pools, therefore goal difference is the fall-back.
As the graph below shows, goal difference could play a decisive role for teams who finish third on three points.
