Which teams have already secured their spot in the knockouts for the 2026 World Cup, who is heading home early, and whose fate is still up in the air?
The group stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America is coming to an end, with some teams extending their stay on the continent and others catching an early flight home.
Here, we list every team who has qualified for the knockout stages, as well as those who are still in flux, and those who have been eliminated.
Who Has Qualified for the Last 32?
Group A: Mexico, South Africa
Group B: Switzerland, Canada, Bosnia-Herzegovina
Group C: Brazil, Morocco
Group D: The United States
Group E: Germany
Group F: –
Group G: –
Group H: –
Group I: France, Norway
Group J: Argentina
Group K: Colombia
Group L: –
All three host nations have enjoyed successful tournaments and are progressing into the next phase of the World Cup.
They will be joined by some of the usual giants of world football. The likes of Germany and reigning champions Argentina secured top spot in their respective groups after Matchday 2, while Brazil and France are also through to the knockouts.
Alongside them will be South Africa (who were given a mere 19.7% chance of qualification before Matchday 3), Switzerland, Bosnia-Herzegovina (who are guaranteed qualification as one of the best third-placed teams), Morocco and Colombia.

South Africa Canada Bosnia-HerzegovinaThree teams have qualified for the knockout stages for the first time.
After they captured the hearts of the footballing world in 2010 but failed to make it out of their group, South Africa squeezed into the last 32 this time around thanks to a 63rd-minute goal from Thapelo Maseko in Wednesday’s win over South Korea.
Jesse Marsch has led Canada to the knockouts in their third World Cup appearance, though he will be disappointed that his side were defeated by Switzerland on MD3, losing top spot in the process.
A draw with Canada and a win against Qatar saw Bosnia-Herzegovina end Group B in third place. With four points, they are guaranteed a knockout spot.
Who Has Been Eliminated?
Group A: Czechia
Group B: Qatar
Group C: Haiti
Group D: Türkiye
Group E: –
Group F: Tunisia
Group G: –
Group H: –
Group I: –
Group J: Jordan
Group K: –
Group L: Panama
All sides eliminated from the tournament at this stage are leaving North America without a victory.
Czechia disappointed in group A, failing to capitalise on the 65.2% chance the Opta supercomputer gave them of finishing in third place.
Qatar’s 85.9% chance of elimination was confirmed as they lost 3-1 to Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Meanwhile, Türkiye, who were once again fancied as so-called ‘dark horses’ in a major international tournament, flattered to deceive, taking over 60 shots without scoring a goal across their first two matches.
The true wooden spoon likely belongs to Tunisia, who have endured an awful World Cup campaign that could go down as one of the worst of all time if they are defeated heavily by the Netherlands.
Who Could Still Qualify?
Group A: South Korea
Group B: –
Group C: Scotland
Group D: Australia, Paraguay
Group E: Ecuador, Curaçao, Ivory Coast
Group F: Netherlands, Japan, Sweden
Group G: Egypt, IR Iran, Belgium, New Zealand
Group H: Spain, Uruguay, Cape Verde, Saudi Arabia
Group I: Senegal, Iraq
Group J: Austria, Algeria
Group K: Portugal, DR Congo, Uzbekistan
Group L: England, Ghana, Croatia
The new World Cup format allows the eight best third-place teams to qualify for the knockouts, meaning there are multiple sides still in contention for a last-32 place. Some, like Scotland, will have to sit and wait, hoping results go their way. The Opta supercomputer believes there is a 24.9% chance of this happening.

The biggest shocks that could potentially come from those groups would be the lowest-ranked team in the tournament, New Zealand, qualifying, or minnows Cape Verde reaching the last 32.
