The rocker became a household name with the release of his 1976 No. 1 album Frampton Comes Alive and the 1977 follow-up, I’m in You, which kept him on the charts. So perhaps it's no surprise that the movies came next—although that was a hesitant move for the “Show Me the Way” singer.
During a recent interview with Word in Your Ear, Frampton, 76, described Sgt. Pepper’s as a “horrible, stupid movie.”
“Of course, he wasn't,” Frampton added of the Beatles legend. “I met up with Paul later at Wembley, the night before we played there and Wings were playing, and Linda goes, ‘Hey, Paul, Peter's doing that Sgt. Pepper movie. And I said, ‘Yeah, well, Paul, I'll see you on set.’ And he said, ‘I'm not going. I'm not in that movie.’ I thought, ‘They got me.’”

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band was about the Heartland-based band’s battle with evildoers in the music industry, and it was set as a rock opera. And although McCartney was a no-show, the film featured an ensemble cast of superstars, including comedy legends George Burns and Steve Martin, actor Donald Pleasence, and musical acts that included the Bee Gees, Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, Earth, Wind & Fire, and Billy Preston.
“They were all super nice to me, and the three of them is like a tank coming at you,” Frampton shared. “So it was that [friendship] that got us through the movie anyway.”
During a 2024 appearance on The Bob Lefsetz podcast, Frampton spoke out about McCartney’s wise decision to skip Sgt. Pepper’s.
Things only got worse as production began.
