How do you win a game in which your pitching staff coughed up not one, not two, not three, but FOUR home runs (to your team’s ZERO)?
Six errors, that’s how.
Tonight, the Mets’ defense (the infield, alone, actually) committed SIX errors, which just has to be the most frustrating thing to watch as a fan when your guys otherwise send four balls over the wall. Also frustrating? Scoring just five runs on four home runs. I’d feel bad for them, but we have more starting pitchers on the Injured List than they had errors tonight. And they had a LOT of errors tonight. So they can cram it.
But while we’re on defense – and before we get to anything else – I have to give some love to Alex Bregman (and Michael Busch), who combined for a key defensive stop in the bottom of the eighth inning with the game still close (at the time). After Trent Thornton gave up a leadoff double to Bo Bichette with the Cubs up just two, Bregman made a really strong stop on a 96.2 MPH rocket to third base and slung it across the field, where Busch scooped it up for the out, preventing what was then a critical run from scoring.
Bregman’s defense at third started out shaky this season, but he has definitely settled in as time has gone by.
But, come on … this game (and this day) wasn’t about the defense. For the second time TODAY, the Chicago Cubs offense plated ten runs on the Mets. TEN. Twice. They scored 20(!) runs in this doubleheader, and that just makes me so happy. If we’re going to literally run out of starting pitchers, it certainly helps to remember that this team is SUPPOSED to have a potent offense. And this month, they certainly have.
And the best part? It wasn’t just PCA carrying them, as he has for so much of this month. Sure, he reached twice and knocked in a run (bad game for him, these days). But Dansby Swanson went 3-5 with a triple, and Nico Hoerner went 3-5 with THREE doubles. And that after they each reached twice in the first-half of this doubleheader.
Those two guys have been completely absent on offense for nearly two months, but they each had a big slump-busting day, complete with extra base hits, runs scored, and even more batted in. Just so, so nice to see.
You know who else had a nice game? Pedro Ramirez. The Cubs rookie had three hits of his own, plus two RBI and four runs scored. Bottom of the order getting it DONE.
The Cubs have now guaranteed themselves a series win on the road, with a chance for the sweep tomorrow. They have also won nine of their last twelve games (which actually just makes me even more annoyed about that big late-game meltdown over the weekend, but alas … we’ll take what we can get).
The road from here remains challenging, especially this weekend against the Brewers, who have lined up Jacob Misiorowski, Kyle Harrison, and Brandon Woodruff … but you just control what’s in front of you. And right now, what’s in front of us is a Cubs offense, awoken from its slumber, scoring runs the way they’re supposed to.
Also, hey, don’t forget: We’ve got our live watch party tomorrow at Frontier. You can RSVP here (it’s free, with an open tab, so come on by and hang out as we watch the Cubs go for the series sweep!).
