How social media influences the success of book-to-screen adaptations ...Middle East

“Off Campus,” “Heated Rivalry” and “Project Hail Mary” are just some of the new book-to-screen adaptations that have been all the craze on social media. From a generation built on TikTok fan edits, online fandoms and BookTok recommendations, it is no surprise that Hollywood is taking advantage of these built-in fanbases.

According to Richard Wells, a writer for Tavelentry, film adaptations generate 53% more revenue than an original screenplay due to the ratio of low budgets and high success. “Heated Rivalry” reflected the effects of this new trend, becoming the most-watched scripted acquired show from a different platform in HBO Max history, with increased viewership of 100% since the release of the series finale.

Although many of these adaptations reaped massive success, critics and audiences are undecided if these books should be remade on screen, debating the focus of economic success over the loss of original ideas.

“I think movies should be a really good creative outlet,” said Madison Ambrose, a sophomore microbiology major. “I feel like there should be a lot of original ideas that get to shine through.”

Since these film versions are adapted from their beloved novels, audiences have strong opinions on the accuracy of the remake and whether it meets their expectations. The casting of the main characters is important to approval and often controversial due to the varying imaginations of each reader.

“I usually have an idea of what characters or locations look like in my mind when I read a book, so seeing the movie after is sometimes strange,” said Morgan Starr, a sophomore microbiology major.

Some adaptations have done the exact opposite of accuracy, focusing on aesthetics and cinematography over staying true to the novel. Emerald Fennell’s “Wuthering Heights” saw great controversy surrounding its modernized changes in casting and focus on its gothic horror essence. Notoriously difficult to adapt because of its complex themes, “Wuthering Heights” was still liked by many for its flashy visual choices, rather its focusthan focusing on a faithful adaptation.

“As long as it’s not all book-to-movie adaptations, I like to see new ideas in the movies that I watch,” said Nicholas Cabrera, a sophomore microbiology major. “I also do like to see the books that I read attempted on the screen.”

Many of these adaptations have turned to series on streaming services, instead of the cinematic experience of a theater. Ambrose said that it depends on if the book is geared for a series or a theatrical release, and that some films are rushed and lack the development compared to the novel.

“I feel like when movies are made to be shown in theaters, it’s a super cool experience,” Ambrose said. “I definitely will go to a theater to see the movie, because there are movies I feel like you should watch in theaters.”

Gen-Z fanbases continue to be undecided on the influx of book adaptations and whether Hollywood should sacrifice original ideas for viewership. Book adaptations are reliable watches for many, with their success being the buzz on social media despite controversy.

“I enjoy seeing a lot of the book-to-movie ones, just because I think that I would rather see those rather than bad movies,” Ambrose said. “If you do take things in a new direction, and you’re trying to go based off of a book, there’s going to be a lot of people who don’t like it.”
