Joey Bosa is among the high-profile pass rushers who remain available in free agency as June winds down. But if you are a Chicago Bears fan who is banking on the team adding the five-time Pro Bowl edge defender as a summer signing, I would encourage you to adjust your expectations. Based on the latest from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, it doesn’t sound like Bosa is signing with anyone.
In the latest episode of the Adam Schefter Podcast, the ESPN insider dropped this nugget (via Pro Football Talk) when discussing the possibility of Joey Bosa joining the San Francisco 49ers and playing with his brother, Nick:
“It is more likely than not that Joey Bosa has played his last NFL down. Now, again, could a situation like the 49ers come along that entices him enough to come out and play again? Yeah, absolutely. We saw it happen last year with Philip Rivers, so you never know when a player is fully done and when he’s not done. But the fact of the matter is, I think if the Niners wanted to pair those two together, it probably would have happened already. I think if Joey Bosa wanted to play football, it probably would have happened already.”
That’s the kind of quote that makes me think that you can count the Chicago Bears (and other possible suitors) as being out of the picture. This isn’t to say that it can’t happen. But when you consider that Joey Bosa has gone this deep into the offseason without a deal, then perhaps it is more realistic than not that we’ve seen the last of Joey Bosa in the NFL. But hey, maybe he’ll pull off a Philip Rivers. Stranger things have happened…

It would not be the first time that a notable NFL player has used the media for leverage in negotiations. With that being said, I recall a PFT tidbit from Nick Bosa in late May about his brother Joey not spending much time thinking about football, and instead working on his golf game. Perhaps that line should have been taken more seriously and not dismissed as a zinger from one brother to another.

Joey Bosa is one of the handful of premier names who are still available in NFL free agency. A five-time Pro Bowler who has collected 77 sacks, 96 tackles-for-loss, and 172 quarterback hits in 122 career games would be nice to add to this defense. However, Bosa’s injury history is a cause for concern for me. I’d hate to see the Bears roll the dice on a player with an injury history that raises yellow flags. And based on his brother Nick’s comments about Joey’s focus on his golf game, it also doesn’t sound like the free agent is in a rush to sign anytime soon. The Bears should want a player who wants to be at Halas Hall.
It isn’t the end of the world if Joey Bosa takes himself off the board of available free agents. But the closer we get to the start of training camp, the more I’ll start to feel angsty when discussing the Bears’ need for pass-rush help. However, I suppose we can cross that bridge when we get to it.
