ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The leader of Rochester Family Mission is working to make sure it continues operating beyond a big milestone.
Every program Rochester Family Mission runs is donation driven, including its clothing closet and food pantry, but donations have slowed down. Executive Director Warren Meeks Jr. said people are going through tough times and rising costs are making it difficult to donate.
“We cannot survive without the love and support, donations from our community members as well as our community churches,” Meeks Jr. said.
In the past, the pantry would get donations directly from United Way too, but that has stopped. Rochester Family Mission helps more than 4,000 people with food every month, including Claudette Williams.
“It’s very important for the ones that need it,” she said. “I’m a senior citizen now, so I definitely need it because my funds don’t add up all the time.”
Williams has relied on Rochester Family Mission for the past four years. She said it would hurt the community if it stopped operating.
“It would be a big, big loss, a big loss, not just for me, for everybody around here,” Williams said.
The mission has been serving people in Rochester since 1927. Meeks Jr. said his focus is on reaching the 100-year mark and continuing to serve people beyond that milestone.
“We’re visiting organizations, you know, churches, local churches, we’re also visiting businesses, and we’re looking for those that want to find an avenue to give back to the community and partake in helping us to continue this mission,” Meeks Jr. said.
Meeks Jr. wants to bring back programs like hot meals on Wednesdays and senior food delivery if he can find the volunteers and donations to do so. Anyone interested in volunteering or donating can visit RFMission.org for more information.
