FAIRPORT, N.Y. — The Village of Fairport has a new police chief. The village announced Wednesday it has appointed Andrew Whitaker as its next chief of police.
Whitaker was offered the role in May. The village had to wait on a waiver from New York State before it became official.

Most recently, Whitaker served as captain of patrol operations with the Irondequoit Police Department.
Whitaker will begin his new role in Fairport on July 7. In April, Village Manager Bryan White told News10 Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke that the new police chief will evaluate safety measures after a handful of fights broke out outside Fairport bars.
