ROCHESTER, N.Y. — LGBTQ leaders held a press conference in Rochester Wednesday to mark the 15th anniversary of New York State’s Marriage Equality Act and celebrate the law’s impact on LGBTQ rights.
One activist said it was a fight for health insurance that marked the start of her journey for marriage equality. Ann Tischer, an LGBTQ advocate, shared how her activism began.
“Bess and I were accidental activists. I needed health insurance so we started advocating for benefits from Bess’ employer. Things escalated from there, until we started working for marriage,” Tischer said.
Local leaders also stressed the continuing importance of protecting marriage equality as Pride Month continues.
