It appears the chicken did in fact make it to the other side of the Eisenhower Expressway.
It actually made it all the way to Western Avenue.
According to a family, who reached out to NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, the chicken was rescued near the Western Avenue exit just moments before Jeanes captured footage of the animal on the shoulder of the expressway.
The scene unfolded around 9 a.m. on I-290 near Kedzie.
Jeanes reported traffic had slowed dramatically as an animal crossed the street, then captured footage of a chicken on the left shoulder of the inbound lanes.
When NBC Chicago reached out to Illinois State Police about whether a chicken was reported to be crossing the road, they answered with the best possible response.
“We will check the other side,” a spokesperson for the department said.
Ultimately, no calls surrounding the animal had come through Tuesday morning, however.
Later that evening, Jeanes received a message he had been waiting for: the chicken was safe.
An NBC Chicago viewer told Jeanes her daughter rescued the chicken and shared photos of the bird.
Along with being safe and sound, the chicken now has a name: Hen-nessy.
Authorities do not recommend exiting your vehicle on an expressway for situations like this. Instead, they suggest contact officers or emergency responders for help to ensure a safe rescue.
