The Opener: Alcantara, Bratt, Cardinals ...Middle East

News by : (MLBtraderumors) -

Marlins right-hander Eury Perez was supposed to miss eight weeks with a hamstring strain. Instead, he’ll return to the big-league club in less than a month. Perez is expected to be activated to start against the Rangers today.

1. Alcantara sets franchise record

Another Marlins righty, former NL Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara, made Miami history on Monday against Texas. The veteran tossed 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball with four strikeouts. When Alcantara punched out Kyle Higashioka in the seventh inning, he moved atop the franchise leaderboard in strikeouts. Alcantara’s 1,002 Ks put him one ahead of Ricky Nolasco, who spent eight of his 12 MLB seasons with the Marlins. Alcantara has spent the majority of his career in Miami. Despite persistent trade rumors, he’s been a rock-solid member of the rotation since coming over in the Marcell Ozuna deal.

2. Bratt gets the call

The Diamondbacks recalled lefty Mitch Bratt yesterday. He’ll get the ball for his big-league debut against the Cardinals on Wednesday. Bratt came over from the Rangers in the Merrill Kelly trade last season. He’s performed well since joining the organization. Bratt delivered a 31.6% strikeout rate across six Double-A starts to close 2025. He’s posted a 2.84 ERA through 11 outings at Triple-A this year. With Ryne Nelson and Michael Soroka on the IL, there are opportunities in the Arizona rotation right now. Bratt and fellow prospect Jose Cabrera could stick around if they pitch well.

3. Cardinals press conference on Wednesday

Several key members of the Cardinals organization will be present at a press conference on Wednesday afternoon at Busch Stadium. Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. and club President Bill DeWitt III will share news regarding “ownership and organizational leadership” at the event (h/t Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch). President of baseball operations Chaim Bloom and senior VP of business operations Anuk Karunaratne will also be in attendance.
