A 16-month-old girl from Schaumburg has already visited more national parks than most people will in their lifetime and now her parents are trying to set a world record.
What began as a tradition for Akshay Sharma and his wife Aprajita Rai took on an entirely life after the couple had a chat with a park ranger during a trip with their young daughter, Aarya.
“We were talking to the ranger and that ranger suggested that this has never been done before, ‘I have never seen any child that has visited 15 national parks in seven or eight months,'” Sharma said.
The couple hopes their 16-month-old daughter Aarya will become the youngest person to ever visit all 63 U.S. national parks.
“We think of kids as fragile little beings, but they are pretty resilient. I think we give them less credit than they are supposed to get, kids are very much resilient and they can adapt to any situations,” Rai said.
Aarya and her parents have visited 34 national parks so far and they’re headed to Alaska this weekend where they hope to knock out seven more park visits.
While Aarya is still too young to understand the importance of nature, she has already developed a love for nature, her mom said.
“The more we put her out there, outdoors, the more she’ll be fond of nature,” Rai said.
They collect junior badges from the parks they’ve visited, and plenty of photos to capture the memories they make as a family along the way to the record.
“Seeing the experience from their eyes, you can just feel it by their expression and how they are behaving,” Sharma said. “I will say I am reliving all those moments which we spend in the national parks again from her eyes.”
