Cogan McMichaels is only 21 years old – he’s a senior music major at UNC – but he’s already been releasing music for more than five years, and the origin of “Play Pretend” dates back even further: he says he first came up with that title all the way back in seventh grade.

“It took about two and a half years of writing and recording,” McMichaels says of the album. “A lot of the songs were recorded in my bedroom, or in Limerick, Ireland when I was studying abroad – (but) a couple songs were recorded very late at night in the practice rooms of the UNC music building.”

The result of those two-plus years of work: a stellar collection of 11 tracks, with an ethereal, dreamlike indie sound and introspective lyrics drawn largely from McMichaels’ own life – and some of the people in it.

“A lot of it is about people in my life,” he says. “And that of course makes it personal, but also just the act of creating it was so individual. I would spend hours – I mean, I can’t even tell you how many hundreds of hours it took to get this entire thing completed. And I think that intimacy led it to being a very personal thing to me.”

(Do the people in question know they’ve been written about? “I would say probably two of them know,” he says with a laugh. “One wasn’t too happy [at first] – and then she listened to it and liked it a lot more than I think she let on.”)

That Cogan McMichaels has followed a path into music is no surprise, as he comes from a very musical family: his father Matthew is a member of iconic local band The Mayflies USA, while his brother Max is a member of the band Cy&I. “My mother’s an artist (too),” he adds, “and all my life she’s inspired me to be creative, and work in my perspective, and share that with the world at any cost.”

McMichaels and his brother will be sharing a stage next month: Cogan and Cy&I are both performing at Local 506 Wednesday, July 15, along with Adam Xavier.

As for the message McMichaels wants people to take away from “Play Pretend”?

“It’s an album about love and aspirations and things like that – but I feel like the deeper undercurrent is about growing up and making things happen in your life,” he says. “That’s the entire idea of ‘playing pretend’: if you want something to be real in your life, for a while you have to pretend that it is, (or) otherwise it won’t happen.”

Cogan McMichaels stopped by Live & Local (accompanied by Luke Aiello and Henry Romeo) to discuss the album and play three songs: “In My Mind,” “Love Is,” and the title track, “Play Pretend.” Listen:
