A man was charged with a felony after accidentally firing a gun inside a residence and injuring a family member in suburban Glendale Heights, law enforcement said.
Fernando Cardoso, 21, was charged by the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office with reckless discharge of a firearm, a Class 4 felony.
Police said at around 4:06 a.m. on Tuesday, officers were called to the 400 block of James Court near Pearl Avenue for a report of shots fired. When officers arrived, the caller told them a bullet went through a bedroom wall and into the living room, where it hit a family member who was sleeping on the couch.
Authorities allege the bullet was fired from a Smith & Wesson .45 caliber handgun, which was being handled by Cardoso in his bedroom.
The injured family member was transported to an area hospital. They were later treated and released.
Cardoso had a valid Firearm Owners’ Identification Card, authorities said.
