Times of San Diego will offer match previews of U.S. and Mexico games during the World Cup. For more, see our 2026 World Cup Guide to local watch parties.

Match: Mexico vs. Czechia

When: 6 p.m., Wednesday

How to watch: Fox5 San Diego, Telemundo and FOX One.

Mexico

With El Tri already clinching the top-seed in Group A after its 1-0 victory over South Korea, head coach Javier Aguirre will have decisions to make as to who will get playing time at Estadio Azteca.

Strengths: Goalkeeper Raúl “Tala” Rangel, who has kept back-to-back clean sheets. Maintaining his rhythm is a priority even though the result won’t impact El Tri one way or another.

Keep an eye on: Mexico’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, 40, who is representing the national team for a sixth time in a World Cup and is very familiar with el Coloso de Santa Úrsula, or Estadio Azteca. The national team legend will start against Czechia in Mexico City, giving the fans one last chance to offer him a resounding ovation.

The stadium was Ochoa’s home from 2004 to 2011 and then again from 2019 to 2022, when he played for Liga MX side Club América. The Guadalajara native gained international fame during the 2014 World Cup group stage keeping a clean sheet and making several miraculous saves versus tournament host Brazil. In the most recent World Cup (Qatar, 2022), Ochoa saved a penalty from Poland during the first group stage match, resulting in a scoreless draw between the two sides.

Another thing to watch for is how defender César Montes plays after receiving a controversial red card against South Africa. He wasn’t available against South Korea, so it will be interesting to see if he’s physical or tentative on 50/50 balls or defending the counterattack.

Czechia

Czechia still has a chance to finish in second place in the group with a win over Mexico and a South Africa victory over South Korea or it can potentially get into the knockout round in third place by earning a draw, combined with a South Africa tie or loss to South Korea.

Strengths: Czechia has experience playing under pressure having secured their spot in the World Cup by winning back-to-back penalty shootouts against the Republic of Ireland and Denmark (side note: That’s the game which prevented SDFC fans from getting to watch Anders “El Paletero” Dreyer in the World Cup).

Keep an eye on: Czechia will come out strong trying to take the early lead since they are in do-or-die mode. They also will try using their height on set pieces and corners which Mexico is historically vulnerable at defending.
