It’s time, Bulls fans! The moment we’ve been waiting for months has finally arrived.
Today is Day 1 of the 2026 NBA Draft, where the Chicago Bulls hold picks No. 4, No. 15, No. 38, and No. 56 in what many consider to be a loaded draft class. Also, the overnight trade to bring in Nic Claxton could definitely play a role in their draft strategy.
We’ll also talk about Stephen A. Smith going off on the Bulls (for some reason), Rick Brunson having to choose between his son and D-Rose, and so much more.
Let’s talk Bulls basketball.
Derrick Rose © Mike DiNovo-Imagn Images Today, the first round of the 2026 NBA Draft will tip off at 7 p.m. CT. For the Bulls, that means at least two young rookies will be joining the Windy City. Based on where Chicago is picking, the hope is that these players can help turn the roster back toward relevance. But before we get there, it starts with something simple: making the right picks. No one is perfect when it comes to the NBA Draft, but the Chicago Bulls cannot afford another miss. I think the only expectation for Chicago should be to take the best player available, whoever that may be, and figure out the rest later. Most mock drafts, including my own, have the Bulls leaving Brooklyn with Caleb Wilson and Cam Carr. But nothing is set in stone until Adam Silver walks to the podium and announces those picks. I really hope the Bulls knock this one out of the park. We’re due for some luck. And, again, we’ll have to wait and see how Claxton influences anything… stay tuned! While the NBA Draft will be the main topic of conversation today (and maybe the trade of a Greek MVP), there is still some other fun Bulls-related news to get to. Yesterday, the Dallas Mavericks announced Dusty May as their new head coach. He most recently won a National Championship with the Michigan Wolverines and could see three of his former players selected in the lottery later tonight. But what was also reported was that Duke head coach Jon Scheyer was approached multiple times about leaving the Blue Devils to coach the Mavericks and reunite with Cooper Flagg in Dallas. He ultimately turned down the opportunity and decided to remain at Duke, continuing his pursuit of a national championship under his leadership. Scheyer, an Illinois native, was also rumored to be a candidate for the Bulls’ head coaching position, which Tiago Splitter has since filled. According to Brian Windhorst, the Bulls did make an effort. But when ESPN talking head Stephen A. Smith heard about it, he went on a full Chicago-bashing tangent.“The Bulls, they can’t get right,” SAS said on First Take. “I am very disgusted with the Chicago Bulls. Chicago deserves better than what this organization has given them. This is the Bulls… They’ve been riding the coattails of Michael Jordan and his six titles, combined with Derrick Rose ultimately coming there. They haven’t done a damn thing in a decade. I’m sick of the Bulls.”
While I appreciate his passion for Chicago deserving better, and while the context of Jon Scheyer not wanting to join the organization certainly helps explain the reaction, it still feels a little disconnected from where things currently stand. The Bulls have spent the last several months reshaping the organization. Between the front-office additions, coaching hires, draft capital, and rumors about potential moves, there is a level of optimism around the franchise that hasn’t existed in quite some time. This kind of negativity just doesn’t seem to match the mood of the fanbase right now. Hopefully, after tonight’s draft, that optimism only continues to grow, and hope is reignited throughout the organization once again. Also in team news, Jeff Agrest of the Chicago Sun-Times reported that Audacy’s 104.3 The Score and the Bulls have agreed to a multi-year broadcast extension. According to the report, “Chuck Swirsky, Bill Wennington, and Alyssa Bergamini return. The Score will air a 15-minute pregame show hosted by Swirsky and a 30-minute postgame show with a rotation of hosts.”“We consider our broadcasts an essential part of the Bulls experience and a key component of our fan engagement,” Chicago Bulls Chief Operating Officer Ram Padmanabhan said. “We know that The Score feels the same way.”
THE SCORE & the BULLS extended their broadcast agreement, keeping the station as the team’s flagship. Chuck Swirsky, Bill Wennington & Alyssa Bergamini return. The Score will air a 15-minute pregame show hosted by Swirsky and a 30-minute postgame show with a rotation of hosts.

To that, Rick had a pretty definitive answer.“[Derrick Rose] is the baddest guy I have ever played with or coached. Derrick Rose is the best. Again, my son and Derrick have a great relationship. But prime Derrick? No one was better than prime Derrick. Nobody.”

— ESPN Chicago (@ESPN1000) June 22, 2026 It’s always fun to hear just how much respect Rose still commands around the basketball world. Even though his prime ended more than a decade ago, former players, current players, and even some of this year’s draft prospects, including Darius Acuff Jr., Kingston Flemings, and Brayden Burries, continue to speak glowingly about him. Today, the Bulls have a chance to draft the best player this franchise has seen since Derrick Rose. That’s obviously a massive expectation to place on any young prospect, but it’s also what makes tonight so exciting. Hopefully, they get it right.BULLS ON BLEACHER NATION: Go Ad Free | Subscribe to the BN Newsletter
