Antonelli rejects Senna comparisons: ‘I don’t really like it’ ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Kimi Antonelli is leading the Formula 1 world championship, winning races at a relentless rate and forcing rivals to rethink their expectations of what a rookie can achieve.

But there is one comparison the Mercedes sensation wants no part of.

As his remarkable breakthrough campaign continues to gather momentum, some observers have begun drawing parallels between the young Italian and the late Ayrton Senna.

The similarities, at least on the surface, are easy to spot. Antonelli has become the sport's hottest rising star, possesses a fearless driving style and, to many fans, even bears a striking resemblance to the three-time world champion.

For Antonelli, however, the comparison crosses a line.

The 19-year-old may be rewriting expectations in Formula 1, but he believes placing him alongside one of the sport's most revered figures is both premature and unfair.

Antonelli refuses to enter the Senna conversation

Antonelli currently leads the Drivers’ standings with a 41-point lead over Lewis Hamilton, a comfortable position he owes in large part to his incredible stretch of five consecutive victories.

The hype surrounding the teenage prodigy has grown with every race, bringing inevitable comparisons to some of Formula 1's all-time greats. Yet when asked whether being linked to Senna creates additional pressure, the championship leader immediately pushed back.

"Wow, what a strong question,” he said.

"No, I haven't read about that, and to be fair, I don't really also like the comparison because I don't feel like I should be compared to someone who has made the history of the sport and I haven't done not even a single bit of what he has been able to achieve. So I don't feel like it's very fair.

Kimi Antonelli visited the grave of Ayrton Senna ahead of last year's Brazilian GP.

"Also, I myself, I don't really like it because I said before, for all these reasons.

"Yes, he's my idol, he's someone I get inspired, but I just feel like it's not really fair to get compared to him, especially at this stage of my career, because it's just the beginning and there's still so much to achieve, so much to do and so much to improve, and I feel like I'm still very far from his level. So that's my answer."

The response offered a revealing glimpse into Antonelli's mindset. While many young drivers might embrace comparisons to one of Formula 1's greatest icons, the Mercedes driver appears far more focused on establishing his own identity than living up to someone else's legacy.

Championship leader keeping his feet on the ground

Antonelli's reluctance to entertain lofty comparisons comes despite producing performances that have put the rest of the field on alert.

In Barcelona last time out, he looked set to strengthen his grip on the championship, having overtaken Russell in the closing stages before edging away. But a mechanical issue abruptly ended his afternoon and another major points haul.

Even that setback has done little to dent confidence in the paddock that Antonelli is becoming the man to beat.

Among those impressed is Ferrari driver Carlos Sainz, who believes the young Italian has all the tools required to convert his advantage into a world title.

"Well, I don't think we even know how many races are left, because of the calendar also," he said, quoted by Crash.net.

"So it's difficult to put a number to it, of how much it's Kimi's to win or to lose. But I think he's been driving great.

"I think he's done an incredible year so far, I think he's maximising his car and his chances of winning races. I think the closer it gets to a Championship, normally the pressure also gets higher and higher, as we saw last year with Oscar and Lando.

“The closer you get to that crunch point, when you see the Championship is yours or not, I think that's when it gets real. And I back 100% in Kimi that he can do it.

“So, I don't know. It's going to be super exciting to see. I think it's going to be a great championship and I think so far, if he keeps driving like he's driving, it's going to be very difficult for anyone to beat him."

Those are strong endorsements for a driver still at the beginning of his Formula 1 journey.

Yet while others search for historical comparisons, Antonelli is making it clear he has no interest in being presented as the next Ayrton Senna. His focus remains on becoming the first Kimi Antonelli – and, if his current form continues, that may soon be more than enough.
