Melissa Etheridge is sharing her secrets to a lasting marriage with wife Linda Wallem.
“I had two miserable disasters, so I’ve learned that probably the most important thing is to love yourself as much as you love the other person, and as much as you want them to love you, because a successful marriage is a side-by-side arrangement,” Etheridge, 65, exclusively told Us Weekly on June 5 on the heels of her CMA Fest 2026 performance presented by SoFi in Nashville.
Etheridge and Wallem, 65, tied the knot in May 2014. Prior to their marriage, the “I’m the Only One” singer dated Julie Cypher from 1990 to 2000, during which time the pair welcomed kids Bailey Jean, 29, and forever 21-year-old Beckett, who died from an opioid overdose in May 2020.
Etheridge was also in a long-term relationship with Tammy Lynn Michaels from 2003 to 2010. The exes share twins Miller and Johnnie Rose, 19.

“The sexiest and coolest thing you can do is take care of yourself for your partner,” Etheridge continued of her most cherished relationship advice. “A lot of this came after I went through cancer. I don’t want anyone to have to take care of me. That’s not what I’m about.” (Etheridge battled stage II breast cancer in 2004.)

“We learn and grow together. We were both kind of in the industry,” Etheridge explained. “She’s in television and film and stuff, and so we try to work together as much as we can, and she comes out on the road with me most of the time, which really, really helps, and she makes me laugh every day.”
Etheridge and Wallem celebrated 12 years of marriage on May 31 by sharing a playful duet via Instagram.

“This is a theme song,” the couple sang. “Do you want to sing along?”
Etheridge then jokingly asked Wallem, “Who are you?” Turning to the camera, the singer noted, “She’s married for 12 years lady.”
Wallem then added, “You know what, it’s our anniversary today, and happy anniversary.”
After more singing, Etheridge and Wallem shared that they celebrated their anniversary by visiting the place where they got married.
“It was really fun, and we ate food and walked around and remembered what it was like,” Etheridge said. “It’s fun being married for a long time.”
Unfortunately, Etheridge and Wallem may not duet outside of social media anytime soon, as the Grammy winner told Us that she can “barely” get her wife to sing when they’re together. However, Wallem has supported Etheridge’s music career in other ways.
“I trust her. Man, when you have a trust with your partner, and not just like, ‘Oh, she’s not going to do anything,’ a trust when I ask her, ‘Give me your opinion,’” Etheridge shared. “She’ll be the first one I’ll play a song for, and I’ll be really just having a hard time. ‘I don’t know about this,’ and I’ll play it for her, and she’ll go, ‘You’re golden. Get out of your head!’ You know, she’ll say something like that, or she’ll say, ‘You can do better, you can,’ but always gently.”
