Nine-year-old Poppy loves going to the San Carlos Library. She said she loves the variety of books the library offers.Poppy isn’t the only kid who loves the San Carlos Library. About a dozen children of all ages ran around the one-room library on June 18. Shelves of books lined the back wall, with round tables with outdated computers filling up most of the rest of the room. The lively sound of children running around the play area filled the room, while adults read books and stared at their screens.  But it’s been several decades since the 1970s building was updated, and the promised construction start date of early 2026 has passed. The City has promised residents of San Carlos a new library time and time again, but now the book appears shut for good, at least for the foreseeable future.During a June community planning group meeting, a representative from Raul Campillo’s office reiterated to residents that any plans to build a new library are dead due to a lack of funding. The announcement, despite being known by many in the community, means a proposal to transform the old, 8,200 square-foot building into a new 25,000 square-foot state-of-the-art library with meeting rooms, computer labs, and separate areas for children and teens, is just a fantasy. And while not getting a new library is one thing, some community members during the June planning group meeting expressed frustration that the $5 million the city earned by selling the adjacent parking lot will not stay in the community, and instead was funneled to city coffers to help fill the city’s budget gap.The parking lot next to the library has been a planned space for the library for 28 years. The City could not build on it right away due to the environmental impacts of the Arco gas station that used to sit on the lot.

Resident Crystal Douda said the current parking situation is already bad. The current parking lot is tight, with limited spots available. Douda said it is hard to find a spot during the summer.A city spokesperson said that while progress has been made on a new library for the San Carlos community, the project is contingent upon secured funding. Due to citywide fiscal challenges, the city does not expect to have the funding for the San Carlos Library soon. The only thing standing in the way of the new library is the $36.3 million still needed to fund the project.
