Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government on Monday announced the standardisation and restoration of the English spellings of various administrative units in accordance with Odia phonetics.
A notification issued by the Revenue and Disaster Management Department stated that the existing English spellings of 64 administrative units across 26 districts have been revised and standardised. The changes cover districts, sub-divisions, tahasils, blocks and urban local bodies.
According to the notification, the revised spellings will come into effect from the date of their publication in the Odisha Gazette. The government clarified that the exercise is confined to correcting and standardising English spellings and does not entail any change in the original names of the administrative units.
Among the prominent revisions, Cuttack will now be officially spelt as Kataka, Bolangir as Balangir, Balasore as Baleshore, Deogarh as Debagada, Keonjhar as Kendujhar, Kendrapara as Kendrapada, Khurda as Khordha, Nayagarh as Nayagada, Sundargarh as Sundargada, Bargarh as Baragada, and Kandhamal as Kandhamala.
