Red Wings lose Sunday, miss out on first-half postseason bid ...Middle East

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Red Wings fell short of clinching a playoff berth for the first time since 2013, losing to the Toledo Mud Hens 9-6 on Father’s Day at ESL Ballpark.

The Red Wings needed either a win or a Memphis Redbirds loss to secure the International League’s first-half title and a postseason spot. Neither happened.

In Rochester’s way was the Toledo Mud Hens, who jumped ahead early, scoring three runs in the second inning and adding two more in the third.

“Well, they just didn’t miss. They didn’t miss any balls that we missed,” manager Matt LeCroy said.

The Red Wings, who scored 14 runs Saturday night, managed just two runs through the first seven innings.

“When you’re playing these games that are magnified and got a lot of hype to them that sometimes you try to do too much. And I think I saw it at times where we got a little bit too big. And then with two strikes we kind of went out of the zone. But that’s baseball, man,” LeCroy said.

After Toledo extended their lead to seven runs, Rochester found some life in the eighth inning. Phillip Glasser hit a double that brought in three runs, cutting the deficit to four.

“Brought that guy in. He’s kind had a funky slot and honestly, was just trying to get on base and try to get an RBI and he honestly just left the pitch I could do damage with and I did it,” Glasser said.

The Red Wings had a chance to keep the rally going in the eighth, but couldn’t capitalize as a Yohandy Morales strikeout stranded a pair of runners. The loss gave Rochester a 45-28 first-half record, falling short of Memphis’s 47-28 mark.

“We got back within a grand slam away from tying it up. But they just pitched better than we did today,” LeCroy said.

The Red Wings will reset to 0-0 when the second half begins Tuesday. Only four teams in Triple-A make the playoffs — the first-half and second-half winners from the International League and Pacific League.

“I’m super proud of our group. They put themselves in a situation to play for something at the end of the first half. We win, we’re in,” LeCroy said.

The International League has 20 teams compared to the Pacific League’s 10, making it harder to secure a postseason spot for East Coast squads.

“It’s really frustrating as an organization as player development that the playoff system the way it is. I mean there’s nothing I can do about it. I don’t have that type of power. But it’s kind of frustrating when you have a team that’s where we’re at our overall record and couldn’t get in,” LeCroy said.

Rochester’s second half will begin against Charlotte on Tuesday.
