North Carolina and Oklahoma‘s quests for a long-awaited national championship will come down to one final game.
The Tar Heels overcame a Game 1 loss in the best-of-three College World Series finals, defeating the Sooners 6-2 on Sunday afternoon to force a do-or-die Game 3 on Monday night.
Carolina, seeking the program’s first title, overcame an early deficit to take command of Game 2. In the top of the third, Jake Schaffner tied the game at 2-2 on a two-run triple, then scored on a wild pitch by Sooners starting pitcher Xander Mercurius to put UNC up 3-2. Later, Owen Hull led off the top of the fifth with a solo home run to give the Heels a 4-2 lead, an advantage that grew to 6-2 thanks to Cooper Nicholson’s two-run shot in the top of the seventh.
Oklahoma, which started the day on a nine-game win streak dating back to the Atlanta Regional, looked like a team ready for a first championship since 1994 as it opened up a 2-0 first-inning lead.
From there, the Sooners were silenced until the bottom of the ninth as Caden Glauber allowed back-to-back walks to put the tying run on deck with one out. But Dylan Harris grounded into a double play as the Heels secured the win.
UNC’s starter Ryan Lynch gave up two runs (one earned), two hits, and a walk in the first inning. He allowed just a hit, a walk, and hit a batter between the second inning until his departure due to injury in the bottom of the fourth. Glauber took over and went 5.0 innings, giving up a hit while striking out eight and walking two.
That pushes things to a winner-take-all Game 3 in Omaha. First pitch from Charles Schwab Field is set for 7 p.m. ET and will be televised on ESPN.
