End of road for Ravindra Jadeja in ODI? Selection snub in IND vs ENG ODI series could be a hint ...Middle East

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has hinted at how the India squad would look at the World Cup 2027. India’s full-strength squad for the IND vs ENG ODI series on June 21 had a notable omission. Ravindra Jadeja. The owner of 232 wickets and nearly 3000 runs in ODIs was not in the squad for the Afghanistan series, nor for the England tour. Instead, Axar Patel made a return.

With around 21-24 ODIs left for the WC 2027, the writings are there on the wall for Jadeja. He has been short in returns in ODIs since the 2023 WC, and the selectors might have moved on from him. Unlike last time, the BCCI squad announcement press release did not even provide a reason behind Jadeja’s snub.

“At this moment, Axar is the first choice in white-ball cricket. There are Washi and Kuldeep as well. It’s difficult to fit Jadeja in the squad and then not play him. I won’t say it’s over for Jadeja, but certainly it’s difficult for him to make the 2027 squad. And age is also not in his favour,” a BCCI source in the know-how told InsideSport.

SIR (Short in returns) Ravindra Jadeja

Since the 2023 WC final, India have played 26 ODIs, with Jadeja featuring in only 13 of them, including the ICC Champions Trophy. He was dropped for the Australia tour after meagre returns against South Africa at home.

Jadeja has picked up 12 wickets in 13 matches since WC 2023 and has scored 149 runs. While his numbers are not that bad, considering Axar Patel has also picked up 16 wickets in 17 games and has scored 377 runs, the selectors have shown their clear preference. In white-ball cricket, Axar is ahead of Jadeja, and chief selector Ajit Agarkar did not hide the truth before the Australia tour in October 2025.

“He is very much in the plans. But there will be some competition for places. Of course, he was there in the Champions Trophy squad, because we took those extra spinners with the conditions there. At the moment, we could only carry one and get some balance in the team with Washi and Kuldeep there as well. And I don’t think we are going to need more than that in Australia,” Ajit Agarkar said at that time.

With Washington Sundar also emerging as a strong candidate apart from specialist spinner Kuldeep Yadav, almost 38-year-old Jadeja has not found the selectors’ backing for WC 2027, even if it means losing out on the best fielder.

Preference for pacers over spinners

Apart from age and diminishing returns, the combination would also be in play in South Africa for the World Cup. The conditions will not permit India to pick a spin-heavy squad. Instead, India would have an extra seamer in the squad rather than a spinner.

India cannot drop Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel. One is a specialist leg-spinner, the only one at the top at the moment, and the other has been the better batter. Washington Sundar offers the off-spin option along with batting.

Hence, there is no place for Jadeja. Also, at 38, Jadeja would take time to recover from injuries. Even in the IPL, Jadeja struggled with a nagging knee issue, apart from tennis elbow. And since his retirement from T20Is after the T20 World Cup 2024, he is no longer the favoured left-arm spin allrounder in ODIs at least. Instead, the selectors want him to focus on Test cricket with a WTC Final still to be reached. Even there, the Border Gavaskar Trophy in January-February next year could be crucial, with Manav Suthar breathing down his neck.

Is it the end of the road for Jadeja in ODIs?

That said, has Jadeja played his last ODI match for India? Maybe. India have 15 months left for the World Cup 2027. In those, India will get around 24-odd ODI matches to perfect their combination. Considering Axar Patel is the clear choice for the left-arm spinner spot, unless there is an injury, Jadeja is not going to South Africa. Even if Axar is injured, the second preference would be Washington Sundar. That could shut down the door for Jadeja in ODIs. Unlike the Champions Trophy in Dubai, India won’t need an extra spinner in Jadeja in South Africa.

Furthermore, Team India have already tried out Manav Suthar in Test and Harsh Dubey in the ODI series against Afghanistan, showing their intention to move on from Ravindra Jadeja. While the BCCI has not clearly stated that, the murmurs suggest so.
