Deiten Lachance’s 2 home runs power Oklahoma past North Carolina in Game 1 of CWS Finals ...Middle East

News by : (SATURDAY DOWN SOUTH) -

Deiten Lachance provided the early power that announced Oklahoma‘s arrival to the College World Series Finals.

Then his teammates up and down the lineup as well as the Sooners pitching took it from there on Saturday afternoon in Omaha, as Oklahoma captured Game 1 against North Carolina with a 9-3 victory. Suddenly, the Sooners are just 1 victory away from winning their first national title since 1994 and their third overall.

That could come as early as Sunday afternoon, when OU (42-22) and UNC (53-13-1) hook up for Game 2 of the best-of-3 series at 2:30 p.m. ET on ABC. Should the Tar Heels bounce back and even the series, the powerhouses from the SEC and ACC will head to a winner-take-all Game 3 on Monday night, which would start at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN.

But Oklahoma wants no part of any Game 3 after drawing first blood with a vengeance on Saturday in a game that was moved up by 5 hours on Friday because of the threat of inclement weather in Omaha. Instead of a primetime start on Saturday, fans got a matinee, and Sooners fans got a treat with a complete Game 1 victory highlighted by Lachance’s early power surge.

OU’s catcher smacked 2 home runs in his first 2 at-bats. The first one gave the Sooners a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. It was an opposite-field blast to right field and his 17th homer of the season, coming with a man on second base and 1 out. It was an early indication of what Oklahoma was about to do to UNC ace right-hander Jason DeCaro.

But North Carolina had its own plans on Saturday, and it struck for 3 runs off OU lefty ace Cord Rager in the bottom of the first to take a 3-2 lead. That lead turned out to be short-lived, and it also turned out to be the Tar Heels’ only runs of the day.

Lachance made it 2 homers in 2 plate appearances in the third, this time teeing off on DeCaro with a 2-out solo shot to left that tied the game at 3-3. It was an 0-2 pitch that didn’t fool Lachance, and the Sooners were back on even ground.

That tie score didn’t last long either. Oklahoma got right back to work against DeCaro in the fourth inning, which he didn’t even make it through. The Sooners struck for 4 runs in the fourth, ripping control of the game and series away from the favored Tar Heels. All 4 runs came with 2 outs, with second baseman Kyle Branch lining a 2-out, 2-strike, 2-run single to center field that put OU ahead for good at 5-3.

Branch’s hit scored Brendan Brock and Dasan Harris, but the Sooners were far from done pouring it on DeCaro. Branch stole second and went to third on a wild pitch before Jason Walk delivered his own single to center that scored Branch to make it 6-3.

That signaled the end of the afternoon for the great DeCaro, who wasn’t so great on Saturday, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits in just 3.2 innings. He walked 1 and labored, throwing 83 pitches. DeCaro was replaced by Walker McDuffie, who allowed an RBI single to Camden Johnson that scored Walk to make it 7-3.

Lachance, bidding for his third homer of the game, flied out to center to finally end the inning, but the damage had been done by Oklahoma and the narrative was written for Game 1.

The Sooners added on in the sixth courtesy of Walk, who delivered another RBI single to center that scored Dayton Tockey to make it 8-3.

Then Oklahoma got a little greedy in the ninth, adding another run on a double-play grounder by Jaxon Willits, and the Sooners had given their pitching staff more than enough run support. Rager settled down after the rocky first inning, shutting down North Carolina the rest of the way in a 5-inning effort with 5 strikeouts. He threw exactly 100 pitches, allowing 5 hits and walking 2.

Rager was backed up by lefty Gavyn Jones, who tossed 2.1 shutout innings while allowing 2 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 4 batters, coming up big in this crucial moment in the sixth:

Righty LJ Mercurius finished things off for Oklahoma with a flourish, covering the final 1.2 innings while allowing 0 hits, walking 1 and striking out 2.

Oklahoma drew first blood in the best-of-3 CWS Finals on Saturday, but there is still a lot of work to do for the Sooners to climb college baseball’s mountain.
