Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz after claiming Israeli strikes on Lebanon have violated the peace agreement brokered by the US.
According to the Iranian military, the key waterway – which is vital for oil shipments – would be shut off to vessels after a breach of the ceasefire agreement.
Iranian state media has reported Tehran’s military command as warning that the closure is the “first step” in their response to “ceasefire violation” and that further action would be taken if “aggression” continued.
A statement released by the Khatam-al Anbiya Central Headquarters read: “It is hereby announced that the Strait of Hormuz will be closed to vessel traffic; It is noted that this first step is a response to the enemy’s breach of promise, and if the aggression continues, further steps will be planned and taken to force the enemy to comply with its obligations.”
The threats come as US Vice President JD Vance plans a trip to Switzerland for further talks with Iran. Vance said he was confident the ceasefire would hold until a permanent agreement was reached and maintained that there was no evidence that the Strait had been closed.
Speaking to Fox News earlier today, Vance claimed the flow of oil through the Strait had returned to pre-war levels.
He said: “We got 16 million barrels out of the Strait of Hormuz in just the last 24 hours. That is basically to where it was before the war even started, and and so that suggests that the straits really are open.”
