View this post on InstagramThe track, which originally appeared on the band’s self-titled debut album in 1971, is the focus of a massive deluxe reissue, featuring 15 unreleased recordings, rare radio sessions, and new stereo mixes, all in celebration of the album’s 55th anniversary.
Written by late frontman Phil Lynott, “Clifton Grange Hotel” holds personal significance for the band, as it is an homage to a real boarding house in Whalley Range, Manchester, managed by Lynott’s mother, Philomena, from 1965 to 1980. The spot, dubbed The Biz, became a legendary retreat for musicians and entertainers in the ’70s, even hosting the Sex Pistols in December 1976.
So, even though neither the song, nor its parent album, made much of a dent on the American song charts, the debut from the Irish rockers paved the way for their 1976 breakthrough record, Jailbreak, which featured their signature hit, “The Boys Are Back in Town.”
