ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Plenty of people are still cleaning up from the wind damage. News10NBC’s Chris Fortune spoke with a woman in Rochester who hired a crew after a tree fell on her roof.

Janice St. Marthe shared her initial reaction to coming home and finding the tree on her roof.

“Oh my God. What am I going to do now?” St. Marthe said.

She found KD Tree Service online and called them up. Antony Sujeevan and his coworker worked on cutting the tree down for hours. Branches were removed section by section.

“This time, it’s more busy and the weather is not good, it’s more windy,” Antony said.

St. Marthe said she saw wind damage all around the suburbs.

“When my granddaughter was bringing me home yesterday, you can see how on Winton Road, it was all tore up. I mean, trees everywhere,” St. Marthe said. “So it’s been pretty bad these past couple of days.”

Around noon, more of the tree still needed to be cut down, but it wasn’t resting on the roof anymore.

“I feel much better now. That tree is came down a lot. And off my house and off the side of my fence,” St. Marthe said. “And I’m feeling much better.”

Antony and his coworker said they have three or four more homes to go to after they finished cutting the tree down from St. Marthe’s home.

What should people do who are dealing with damages?

People dealing with storm damage should file insurance claims as soon as possible to get ahead of what’s expected to be a high volume of claims, according to local insurance expert David Kirst.

Filing quickly helps people get to the front of the line for repairs and allows insurance companies to prevent additional damage from occurring, Kirst said. If damage to a roof or siding isn’t addressed right away, it can lead to other issues.

“You’re going to want to start that claims process,” Kirst said. “There’s going to be a lot of people with damages, so you’re going to want to kind of jump to the front of the line.”

Homeowners should document everything with photos before making any repairs. Anyone who purchases materials for temporary fixes should keep receipts and maintain a running track of all expenses so the insurance company can include those costs in the claim.

There are key differences between auto and home insurance claims. For auto coverage, drivers need comprehensive coverage to be protected from weather-related damage, Kirst said. That coverage also includes glass damage and protects against hitting animals like deer.

“This is the comprehensive coverage that protects you from acts of God, nature type things, animals, all of that stuff is covered under that comprehensive,” Kirst said.

Most homeowner policies cover wind and weather-related damage, but flood coverage typically is not included. However, water backup from sewer and drain issues may have limited coverage if a sump pump fails during heavy rain.

People should wait for confirmation that the claim was received. If no confirmation comes through, they should call the insurance company.

Kirst recommended getting estimates from contractors before filing claims for minor damage. Filing a claim goes on a person’s record and can affect future insurance rates, even if the claim isn’t approved.

“The time to find out that you don’t have coverage for something is not today,” Kirst said. “It’s before you have a claim.”

One important detail: Insurance typically only covers tree cleanup if the tree strikes a structure like a house or car. Trees that fall in yards without hitting anything usually aren’t covered.
