Cordingley has coached 12 National Lacrosse League seasons across four different teams with a 107-97 record. The new bench boss has four NLL championships to his name–two as a coach and two as a player.

The 59-year-old won a pair of titles as a player with the Buffalo Bandits in 1993 and 1996. Then as a coach, he took home NLL cup wins in 2009 with Calgary, and in 2011 with Toronto. Cordingley’s total finals record as a coach is 2-2, having lost in 2010 and in 2016. According to the Knighthawks, Cordingley is seventh in NLL history in coaching wins and seventh in games played at 204.

Last season, the NLL stalwart served as Calgary’s Associate Coach & Player Personnel Coordinator. The new coach says he was surprised when Rochester general manager Dan Carey came calling.

“Well, first it caught me off guard, to be honest with you,” Cordingley said. “I didn’t expect [it], I was in Calgary and was still on contract with them and that, so Calgary told me that he wanted to talk and so, they gave him permission and it was great. It was instant, chemistry. I coached Dan in Toronto. I know what he’s all about. And he’s a very on a straight shooter.”

Cordingley’s playing career was mostly in Buffalo, playing there from 1993-1999 before playing for both the Albany Attack and finally, the original Knighthawks in 2001.

“I’m definitely honored to to be the next head coach of Rochester Knighthawks,” Cordingley said. “It is, it’s a storied franchise. I did end my career there as a player. Even though it was a short stay, it was a it was a memorable one. I just love the, the city of Rochester and you know, the people there’s still some people that are still there that were there when I played.”

Having played and coached in Buffalo for most of his career–Cordingley is familiar with the region’s affinity to lacrosse.

“I live in Orangeville, Ontario. So, up here, lacrosse is second to none during the summer. It’s a hotbed of lacrosse, this area. And I compare Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse to that exact hotbed that we have up here,” Cordingley said.

The Knighthawks went 6-12 last season and missed the postseason, firing long-time head coach Mike Hasen after a 4-1 start turned into a 5-6 midseason mark. Rochesater then brought in Randy Mearns as the team’s interim coach for the final seven games of the year, he went 1-6.
