Brian Urlacher Doesn’t Want to See the Bears Play Home Games in a Dome ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

No matter if the Chicago Bears build in Indiana or Illinois, Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher doesn’t want to see the team play in a domed stadium.

“I do not like the Bears playing anywhere but Soldier Field,” Urlacher said in an appearance on Kevin Clark’s This Is Football show (h/t Pro Football Talk). “Even if they went to Arlington Heights, which is in Illinois, they’re going to be in a dome, and if they go to Indiana they’ll be in a dome. I don’t like the idea of them playing in a dome anywhere.”

More from Urlacher here:

This isn’t the first time Brian Urlacher has chimed in with an opinion about the Bears’ upcoming stadium project. However, this is an instance in which he is more likely to get some support from fans. There is a vocal segment of this fan base that would prefer Chicago’s football team continue to play outdoors, as intended from the game’s inception.

Brian Urlacher sounds off on the Bears possibly losing their home-field advantage

The Hall of Fame linebacker’s argument against a dome is simple enough. He believes the team will lose the home-field advantage edge that comes with playing outdoors in the cold in the waning months of the season.

“It’s the only advantage the Bears have,” Urlacher said. “You go to Soldier Field in November, December? It’s gonna suck. The weather is not gonna be good. You’re not gonna like it. And playing there, you practice in it, you get used to it, there’s some advantage to that.”

Again, the good news is that Brian Urlacher is more likely to find Bears fans who will support this particular take regarding the team’s next stadium. But on the other hand, an open-roof stadium isn’t in the cards. Unfortunately, the only constant in this stadium saga has been the team’s insistence on a fixed-roof dome stadium. Renderings for stadium projects that have been shared publicly have all featured a dome. It’s been like that since the beginning and isn’t going to change anytime soon. I’m sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

With that being said, I understand why the Bears want a domed stadium. Putting a dome on their building would conceivably attract concerts, conventions, Super Bowls, Final Fours, college football playoff games, Wrestlemania, monster truck rallies, and anything else you can think of that could make year-round use of the facility. Those revenue-generating events could be a boon for a new stadium.

However, I have my doubts about how often a new Bears stadium would host these events. After all, if every team that is building a domed stadium is citing a desire to host Super Bowls, Final Fours, and things of that nature, the rotation to get back to Chicago (or Arlington Heights … or Hammond) will take that much longer. And that is before taking into consideration the current rotation of stadiums that are locked into place.

BRIAN URLACHER CALLED PHIL EMERY A “WEIRDO” WHO DIDN’T LIKE WINNING

I’m torn about how to feel about the domed stadium being built for the Bears. Sure, I like the idea of big events that can attract tourists and generate buzz for the areas where they’re being held. But I’m not sure how accessible those events will be to regular folks. When you track how pricey tickets for events like the Super Bowl, WrestleMania, headlining concerts, and championship games are, what stands out is that everyday folks tend to get priced out. Hence, it is tough for me to be wholly behind the domed stadium concept.

Plus, I also like the aura that comes with a game being played in the elements. Snow games are fun. And I’ll hear nothing to the contrary. I’m sure Brian Urlacher would agree. Then again, it wouldn’t matter because it isn’t his decision. Hey, maybe he can chip in with a few bucks for the Bears’ stadium project. It couldn’t hurt to ask.
