ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Our Yellow Alert will continue into evening hours as the winds remain elevated, but the worst is behind us. Wind gusts in excess of 50 mph on Thursday brought down trees and power lines, with more than 20,000 RG&E customers in Monroe County alone losing power during the peak of the strong winds. The good news is the worst is behind us, and the winds will continue to ease up through the rest of the evening and overnight. Our Yellow Alert will be allowed to expire as the sun sets.
Our cold front finally pushes through Thursday evening, with a few more showers or even a gusty downpour. Friday will feature a breeze, but our wind won’t cause issues. Winds will gust to near 30mph at times, which is a far cry from Thursday’s winds! Most of Friday will see a mostly sunny sky, but scattered showers and a few storms will fire along a lake breeze boundary by the mid to late afternoon and early evening hours. This look like they’ll drop south of the city of Rochester, which would be good news for Harbor Fest and the start of Jazz Fest. Temperatures on Friday will top out in the lower half of the 70s.
The weekend also looks pretty good. We’ll see plenty of sunshine on Saturday with some afternoon clouds building back in and just the slight chance of a spotty shower. Father’s Day looks very similar, with clouds and sunshine, and temperatures remaining in the lower 70s with mainly dry weather.
