Should the Bears Sign Joey Bosa? ...Middle East

One NFL pundit sees Joey Bosa as a fit for the 2026 Chicago Bears.

ESPN’s Aaron Schatz shares suggestions for one final move that each of the NFL’s 32 teams could piece together to put a bow on their offseasons. There are some extensions, trades, and free-agent signings that could make sense for all parties. And when it comes to the Bears, Schatz sees a Bosa signing as a sensible move.

More from Schatz, who makes a case for Chicago’s football team to sign Joey Bosa:

Bosa had a 12.2% pass rush win rate last season, 26th among qualifying edge rushers, to go along with five sacks for Buffalo. He has played most of his career with his hand on the ground, so he’s probably the best fit for Chicago’s 4-3 base out of the top three available veteran pass rushers.

In addition to the metrics that support a Joey Bosa signing, Schatz points out the schematic fit. This isn’t something we should overlook in the greater discussion about Bosa’s potential fit in Chicago. I’ve lost count of how many veterans with solid résumés came to town, only to realize that they weren’t a fit for what the team is running. Perhaps Bosa could buck that trend.

Schatz also underscores the underwhelming production from the Bears’ defensive ends who played opposite Montez Sweat last season. There is no denying that Dayo Odeyingbo’s first season in Chicago was disappointing. However, noting that Austin Booker had just 4.5 sacks in 10 games doesn’t fully capture the full picture.

Once he got healthy, Booker finished the season strong with 3.5 sacks, 6 quarterback hits, and 3 tackles-for-loss in the team’s final three regular-season games. I don’t think that a strong finish should preclude the Bears from kicking the tires on a Bosa signing. But they do help build an argument for Booker getting a more extended look in 2026.

Is Joey Bosa a good fit for the 2026 Chicago Bears?

Back in May, colleague Patrick Flowers suggested Joey Bosa as a veteran who could be a quality fit for the Bears. This is what he had to say about a player who, more than a month later, remains on the free-agent market:

If edge is where Chicago feels it needs veteran help, Joey Bosa is still sitting out there in free agency. Bosa spent last season with the Buffalo Bills, recording five sacks and five forced fumbles in 15 games.

The explosiveness that made him a terror in his prime isn’t what it was — he hasn’t cracked double-digit sacks since 2021 — but Bosa logged an 85.5 PFF pass-rush grade last season, which ranked eighth among qualified edge rushers. That’s a legitimate number. His run defense isn’t a selling point anymore, but his 20.1 percent pass-rush win rate on true pass sets ranked 17th among edge rushers. If the Bears want a situational rusher who can still win one-on-one, Bosa fits the profile.

Joey Bosa is one of the handful of premier names who are still available in NFL free agency. A five-time Pro Bowler who has collected 77 sacks, 96 tackles-for-loss, and 172 quarterback hits in 122 career games would be nice to add to this defense. However, Bosa’s injury history is a cause for concern for me. I’d hate to see the Bears roll the dice on a player with an injury history that raises yellow flags. And based on his brother Nick’s comments about Joey’s focus on his golf game, it also doesn’t sound like the free agent is in a rush to sign anytime soon. The Bears should want a player who wants to be at Halas Hall.

Whether the Bears should pursue Joey Bosa is something that I’m sure fans will kick around in the days between now and when training camp rolls around. At a minimum, it gives us something to discuss as a possible cherry on top of a busy offseason. But if things look dicey during training camp or in the preseason, those conversations will likely grow into something more than what they are at the moment. Stay tuned.
