Jonathan Toews, the longest-tenured captain in the history of the Chicago Blackhawks, has decided it’s time to call it a career.
The Winnipeg Jets have scheduled a closed media event / press conference at, of all places, the Jonathan Toews Sportsplex for 11 AM CT on Friday, at which time Toews is expected to announce the conclusion of his NHL career.
I shouldn’t have to run off the list of accomplishments of the greatest captain in Blackhawks history. He’s a future Hall of Famer who led the organization’s resurrection from being irrelevant to a dynasty — all while being the youngest to wear the C on his chest in the history of the organ-I-zation.
A generation of Blackhawks fans exists because of the teams Toews led. Generations of Blackhawks fans came back to the barn to watch the team play in person because of the teams Toews led. He wore the pressure of being the leader of the greatest team in Blackhawks history on a nightly basis and battled through immense physical issues we only later found out were part of his daily life.
After two years away from the game, Toews returned this season and appeared in all 82 regular-season games for his hometown Winnipeg Jets. He was named one of the three finalists for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
