The $500,000 Ohio Derby (G3) may not sound like a glamorous race for 3-year-olds, but it certainly will test the betting acumen of horseplayers looking to rebound from missing out on handsome payoffs through the Triple Crown.
Chip Honcho and Ocelli, third and fourth in the Preakness Stakes (G1), respectively, are among five Preakness and/or Kentucky Derby (G1) runners in a field of 10 going 1 1/8 miles at Thistledown in North Randall on Saturday.
Chip Honcho will be ridden by Jose Ortiz, who guided Golden Tempo to victory in the Derby on May 2 and the Belmont Stakes (G1) on June 6. Golden Tempo bypassed the Preakness, and Ortiz piloted Chip Honcho to third place behind Napoleon Solo and Iron Honor.

Desert Gate Slight 5-2 Favorite over Chip Honcho
Trained by Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen, Chip Honcho is the second choice at 3-1, with Hall of Famer trainer Bob Baffert’s Desert Gate the top choice at 5-2. Desert Gate missed the Triple Crown races but has won two in a row, including the Texas Derby at Lone Star Park on May 25.
Bull by the Horns and Robusta, sixth and ninth, respectively, in the Preakness, are also entered, along with Albus, who finished 15th in the Derby after winning the Wood Memorial (G2).
The rest of the field includes Chad Allen, second in the Texas Derby; Trendsetter, Lexington Stakes (G3) winner third last out in the Peter Pan Stakes (G3); Zihnal, a maiden winner at third asking on June 10; Jupiter, an allowance winner at Thistledown on June 8.
Preakness Runners Look to Rebound in the Ohio Derby
This is a chance for several colts to jumpstart their summer season with a victory following unsuccessful exploits on the Triple Crown trail. Chip Honcho has been close – he won the Gunner Runner Stakes, then ran fourth in the Lecomte Stakes (G3), second in the Risen Star Stakes (G2), and fifth in the Louisiana Derby (G2). He skipped the Derby and then finished 4 ½ lengths behind Napoleon Solo in the Preakness. He has shown tactical speed and should be near the front of the pack.
Ocelli, third in the Derby at 70-1 odds [only a length behind Golden Tempo, with Renegade second], will be ridden again by Tyler Gaffalione as the Connect colt trained by Whit Beckman seeks the first win of his career – he’s 8-0-1-4 but has the most earnings of any of the entries at $729,800. He’s 9-2 on the morning line, leaving from post 5, as Gaffalione will likely wait to make his move in the stretch.
Desert Gate Ships in from California for Baffert
Desert Gate was held out of the Triple Crown races after a sub-par fourth in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes (G3) on Feb. 7. The thought was to train him up to bigger races in the summer, and so far, the Omaha Beach colt is faring well. He won the Hot Springs Stakes by 9 ¾ lengths on March 26 and won the Texas Derby by 6 ¼ lengths over Chad Allen last month.
Top jockey Flavien Prat has the call out of post 8 and will likely be on or near the lead.
