Erosion causes chimney at Beechwood State Park in Sodus to fall into Lake Ontario ...Middle East

SODUS, N.Y. — After years of worsening erosion, the last remnant of a century-old building at Beechwood State Park in Sodus has fallen into Lake Ontario.

The chimney, belonging to a building built in the 1920s as a Girl Scout camp, fell into the lake and shattered. News10NBC’s Kristi Blake visited the park in late May and saw a large cliff facing Lake Ontario. Park caretaker Sal Vittozzi says the park has lost 80 feet of its bluff to erosion in just eight years, with trees and chunks of land falling into the lake. Vittozzi plans to reuse the bricks from the fallen chimney for the park’s firepits.

“We have eight new firepits going in, so I’m going to climb down there and retrieve some of the cobblestones and add them to our new firepits, so the spirit of the Beechwood chimney will live on,” he said in a Facebook video.

Park leaders are now concerned about a pavilion built in 2022, as the edge of the cliff moves closer. Vittozzi said 30 trees across the park have fallen into the lake in the past two and a half months. See more photos provided by the park:
